FACILITIES AND EQUIPMENT USED IN CHESS

Chess Sets
 Chess set usually means a board plus pieces.
 Some players say set to mean just the pieces.
 Sets can be bought as a board together with pieces or assembled by combining a board
with separate pieces.
 The important thing about a chess set is that it be aesthetically pleasing.
 The size and color of the pieces should match the size and color of the squares on the
board.
 Travel chess sets are for use in a car, train, or plane; pieces are usually magnetic or
pegged and there is a convenient place to store the pieces as they are exchanged off
the board.

Chess Board
 A chessboard is the type of game board used for the game of chess, on which the
chess pawns and pieces are placed.
 A chessboard is usually square in shape, with an alternating pattern of squares in two
colors.
 Traditionally wooden boards are made of unstained light and dark brown woods.
 To reduce cost, many boards are made with veneers of more expensive woods
glued to an inner piece of plywood or chipboard; a variety of colors combinations
are used for plastic, vinyl, and silicone boards.
 In western chess the board has a square shape, with its side being divided into eight
parts, resulting in a total of sixty-four squares. For variants, the total number of squares
may range from nine to one hundred and twelve.
 Each individual square of the board can be identified using chess notation,
which may be descriptive, algebraic, or numeric.
 For two-dimensional boards, each horizontal row of squares is called a rank,
each vertical column of squares is called a file, and each oblique line of squares
of the same color is called a diagonal.

Chess Box
 Chess box is a container for holding chess pieces.
 It is most commonly made of wood. But some of the chess boxes are made up of plastic.
 The internal box configuration can be individual slots for each chess piece, one divider to
separate the white and black pieces or no divider with the chess pieces mixed together.
 The external chess box is typically rectangular in shape, but can be done in a variety of
shapes including a coffer top or sliding drawers.

Chess Piece/s
 A chess piece, or chessman, is any of the six different types of movable objects used on
a chessboard to play the game of chess.
 Number of chess piece
 Each player begins with a total of sixteen pieces. The pieces that belong to each
player are distinguished by color. The lighter colored pieces are referred to as
"white," and the player that owns them, "White". The darker colored pieces are
referred to as "black", and the player that owns them, "Black". The word "piece"
has three meanings, depending on the context.
 In the first context, each of the two players begins with the following sixteen pieces in a
standard game:
 1 king
 1 queen
 2 rooks
 2 bishops
 2 knights
 8 pawns

Chess Clock
 It is dual clock with buttons to stop one clock while starting the other, so that the two
clocks never run simultaneously.
 The analog clocks are equipped with a flag that falls to indicate the exact moment the
player's time has expired.
 The analog clocks use mechanical buttons.
 Pressing the button of the clock on one player's side physically stops the movement of
that player's clock and releases the hold on the opponents.

Chess Table
 A chess table is a table, made up of wood or any material. It has the features to make it
useful for playing the game of chess.
 A chess board is usually integral to the table top and often two drawers are provided to
hold the pieces when not in use.
 Chess tables can be extremely decorative, well made and potentially expensive pieces
of furniture in colonial India.
 The most chess tables have the board inlaid or engraved though cheaper tables may
have it painted on.
 A chess table is not necessary to play chess and is not restricted only to playing chess.

Chess Bag
 Chess bags range from simple bags designed for holding just the chess pieces to large
tournament chess bags capable of holding a set of chess pieces, roll-up chess board,
clock, books, and other items.
 Chess bags make it easy for the club and tournament player to both store and travel with
their chess set and anything else they need.

Score Sheets
 Score sheets for recording the moves of a game are another necessity for tournament
play.
 These are usually issued at the start of each round in a tournament, but many players
prefer to record their games in scorebooks.
