Read booklet UNIT 4: READING STORIES TO YOUNG LEARNERS

TASK 1: Select a grade and unit to teach. Plan a sequence of activities including the
phonics learning steps described:
Phonics learning step 1: decoding
Phonics learning step 2: blending
Phonics learning step 3: decoding CVC words

Steps Activities performed in class


Step 1 Students receive cut-up cards with the letters, so they can use it in order
to recognize and repeat the phoneme with their classmates.
Step 2 Students receive cut-up cards with the letters, so they can create CVC
words using a chart in groups and they will be able read the whole
words.
Step 3 Students listen stories with some CVC words in it and they will be able to
read aloud specific words during the story.

Task 2: A STORYTELLING

Objectives:

1. Demonstrate the planning of an effective performance of a storytelling activity.

2. Show a variety of strategies or techniques when presenting the storytelling activity.

3. Design materials to perform the storytelling activity.

Guidelines:

1) The activity will last between 10 to 15 minutes


2) Use or create a story according to the target group: PK to 4th grade.
3) Consider your current teaching context (you can have a look at Propuesta curricular de
Inglés para Educación Básica to have ideas about possible readings or creation of stories)
4) Select ONE unit from the program.
