School is supposed to be your second home, a place to be yourself, where you are warmly
accepted, cared for, valued, treated somewhat, and made responsible for your behavior and
learning under the guidance of adults. However, this is not always the case.

Violence in schools exists, and it takes in many forms – bullying being the most pervasive.
Nobody is being spared from this act. Bullying today has taken many forms that vary from
verbal, physical, or cyber. As access to social media increases, cyberbullying becomes a more
problematic issue.

Actively participating in controlling violence is an indication of love for oneself and respect
for life. This love for others affords justice, thus giving others what is due to them.

What is School Violence?

School violence refers to any act that can hamper the positive school atmosphere and its
education mission.

Forms of Violence in School

Bullying – This is an act of inflicting harm on others through physical, verbal, social means. It
happens when students do severe and repeated verbal or physical acts for the purpose of
inducing physical, emotional, and psychological harm on their peers. Bullying is a way of
proving that one is more powerful than another, and this is not gender specific.

Vandalism – damaging or completely destroying the properties of others intentionally just to


seek some fun.

Fraternities – are club like school organization, who are known to be the more popular ones,
characterized by Greek letters for their names, such as Alpha Sigma Rho, Aquila Legis, Tau
Gamma Phi, and the likes. They are formed as a brotherhood as a brotherhood with helping
each other and protecting each other.

Exploitation – is the act of meanly using one person for the benefit and advantage of another.

Corporal Punishment – This involves teachers, such as pinching, throwing objects such as
books, chalks, and erasers at them, being kicked, choked, hit on the head or nape area, or
banging of one’s head.

Fighting and Assaulting Inside or Outside the School Premises – This involves picking on
someone verbally or threatening injury and harm. Gang rivalry may lead to such violence.

We are living in a world where technological changes move so fast, “too fast too care,” as they
say. Technological advances have their advantages in all domains in life, but they have also
created disadvantages that have taken over our lives and our human relationships – gaps among
persons of the same age, among generations which we feel more strongly on our own homes;
also, in our schools, industries, communities, and among nations. This is so – called
“technology gap, “also known as digital divide,” when referring to information and
communication technology, has created a network of problems, mostly social, and moral ones.
As young people of this generation, you are called upon to a greater understanding of this
phenomenon so that you can contribute in bridging this gap in your relationships, at the same
time, promote rights of people for equal opportunity that will bring about an improvement in
the quality of lives, even by simply making a conscious decision to live a “digitally”
responsible life style.

Technology Gap – A theory that refers to the time lag created between the country that
introduces new goods in the market and those that have yet to learn or to modify the new
technology so as to be able to produce the same goods. This occurs in the field of information
and communication technologies is known as “digital divide.” Digital divide is the inequality
that results from unequal access to, use of, or knowledge of information and communication
technologies.

Inclusive Growth – It ensures that socio – economic growth benefits everyone without further
widening inequality and exclusion.

Levels of Technology Gap

- Among persons of the same age group or among peers.


- Among persons of different age groups or generations.
- Among members of the same family.
- Among students, teachers, and schools.
- Among members of the same community or country.
- Among companies within the same country.
- Among different countries in the world.
Ways to Help the Youth Avoid the Negative Effects of the Use of Technology

- Frequent dialogue or discussion on technology and the youth.


- Massive information campaign on how the youth can report incidents of abuse in the
use of technology.
- Announcements regarding the use of technology and its effects on health, perception,
and attitude.
- There are safe Internet sites that promote wholesome digital activities.

Labor migration or overseas employment has become a part of the culture of every family. For
more than four decades, we have been exporting labor for foreign countries. Poverty is at the
root of this phenomenon. There are positive and negative effects of labor migration; its benefit
is mainly within the economic aspect, but the collateral damage this has done to our families
and society to our society, the breakdown of the families, its adverse manifestations on the
children – is what we are giving our serious attention to, because to hurt the family is to
undermine the very foundation of our society. Government must set better conditions in the
country to curb migration. In the meantime, you are challenged to find, in these problematic
realities of family life, sincere desire to triumph over difficulties through a self – sacrificing
love for the family, and cooperation in its worthy life goals, in order for you to develop as
persons with dignity, in the process.
