TUTORIAL CHAPTER 7: ATOMIC PHYSICS

Question 1:

State two postulates in Bohr’s theory of the hydrogen atom.

Question 2:

Diagram below shows a energy level for helium.

a) Calculate the ionization energy of helium atom in Joule.

b) If light is used to release an electron, calculate its frequency.

Question 3:

Write an equation for the wavelength of Paschen series in helium atom.

Question 4:

Based on the equation given below, sketch a diagram showing energy levels in helium atom.

−13.6𝑍 2 eV
𝐸=
𝑛2

Label the energy for each level from n = 1 to n = 5.

Question 5:

When a helium atom is bombarded, the atom rose into a higher energy state and then fell back to the
lower energy level. What are the three lower frequency spectra lines emitted by the helium atom as it
returns to ground state? Give your answer to three significant figures.
