CHAPTER 1

THE IMPACT OF GLOBALIZATION ON THE ENVIRONMENT AS PERCEIVED BY

SELECTED BSA STUDENTS OF STI COLLEGE ROSARIO

BACKGROUND OF THE STUDY

Introduction

Globalization is defined as the movement of goods and services across borders, as well as
the movement of people, capital, and knowledge (BIS (2017a)). World economies have become
much more integrated, interdependent, and intertwined over the past half century as globalization
and liberalization have appeared to become an inevitable and irreversible trend. A combination
of factors, including regional trading arrangements, the removal of restrictions on the flow of
trade and investment, and rapid technological change, have resulted in a deepening of economic
integration and an intensification of globalization (Aldaba 2011). Trade, finance, global value
chains (GVCs), and migration have all become significantly more integrated in emerging market
economies (EMEs), according to the Bureau of International Statistics (BIS, 2017b).

Several researchers have attributed the unprecedented period of peace and prosperity to
globalization, claiming that it has boosted growth and productivity while also increasing the
number of opportunities available to businesses, investors, and workers (Ibrahim, 2017). This is
particularly true for EMEs, where many observers believe that globalization has played a
significant role in the region's strong growth and significant poverty reduction in recent decades
(BIS, 2017b). In response to the negative and lingering effects of the Great Financial Crisis
(GFC), there has been a growing backlash against globalizations, not only in EMEs but also in
advanced economies, most notably the United Kingdom and the US. Protectionist sentiment is
on the rise all over the world, and policies that are inward-looking are gaining ground in the
public debate.

The following paper examines how globalizations has affected the Philippines. It begins
with a look at the country's globalization trends in Section 2, followed by an examination of the
macroeconomic and distributional consequences of globalization in Section 3. (Section 3).
Section 4 of the paper contains a discussion of the challenges that the country faces as a result of
greater global integration, and the final section contains a discussion of policies (Section 5).
Hypothesis

We believe that the environmental effects of globalization will have a substantial impact on
students in BSA programs at STI College Rosario. We anticipate receiving an accurate response
by completing the survey.
