Contemporary Arts from the Regions

Learning Objective: To introduce the course and its significance.

Art plays an important role in our country’s cultural identity. Art reflects our country’s
history and traditions, its people and the diversity of their cultures, as well as the varied
topography of the country as a whole. The different forms of art created from the different
regions of the country show much about what Philippines is and who Filipinos are.

From the pre-colonial period, these diverse art forms have been continuously evolving
up to the present contemporary times. In this course, the Contemporary Philippine Arts
from the Regions (CPAR), we will focus on artwork done by Filipino artists from the
second half of the 20th century up to the present time. This is aimed to help us appreciate
and understand how the art of this period contributes to the complex matrix of our life as a
nation at present. As Filipinos, being familiar with the different art forms in the Philippines is
essential so we could fully understand our identity as a nation.

Since our school is in the Mindanao, this course will also introduce us to the artists of
the Mindanao regions, as well as their artworks and techniques.

Exercises:
1. Name one Filipino artist you know and give one (1) of his/her artworks. Also, state
which Philippine region is this artist from. (Remember: Cite any references used.)
