Definition of the Three Major Types of Literature

Prose
 It is a from of written language that is not metered and does not rhyme. They usually
use in novels, essays, and other types of nonfiction writing.
 It is a written in paragraph form with basic grammatical structure where it follows the
natural pattern found in everyday speech.
 Its primary purpose is to entertain and convince. The writer feels comfortable in
expressing and narrating ideas because it is straightforward.

Poetry
 It is either written down or spoken orally, it is characterized by an imaginative and
attractive expression of one’s thoughts.
 It is an art itself because it is figurative and it expresses aesthetics of nature, human,
and emotions.
 It is a rhythmical type of literary composition that usually serves to excite the readers.
It is metrical which means that poems are metered or structured.

Drama
 Ir refers to a play performed on the stage, television , or radio.
 The actors act out an event playing different characters. It tends to be more character-
centered than plot-centered.
 It is about storytelling in general. It is basically the development of characters and a
conflict.
