1. Two large plane surfaces are 30 mm apart and the space between them is
filled with a liquid of viscosity µ = 0.962 Pa-s. Assuming the velocity gradient
to be a straight line, what force is required to pull a very thin plate of 0.38 m²
area at a constant speed of 0.35 m/s if the plate is 7.5 mm from one of the
plane surfaces?

2. A cylinder of 130 mm radius rotates concentrically inside a fixed cylinder of

135 mm radius. Both cylinders are 250 mm long. A torque of 0.88 N-m is
applied to maintain an angular velocity of 2¶ radians /sec. Assume the
velocity gradient to be a straight line. Determine the viscosity of the liquid
which fills the space between the cylinders.

3. Benzene at 20⁰C has a viscosity of 0.000651 Pa-s. What shear stress is

required to deform this fluid at a strain rate of 4900/ s?

4. Estimate the height to which water will rise in a capillary tube of diameter
1.5 mm. Use surface tension equal to 0.0728 N/m.

5. Water in a hydraulic press, initially at 140 kPa absolute, is subjected to a

pressure of 116, 300 kPa absolute. Using Bulk Modulus of Elasticity equal to
2.5 GPa, determine the percentage decrease in the volume of water.

6. Estimate the capillary depression for mercury in a glass capillary tube 1.5
mm in diameter. Use surface tension equal to 0.514 N/m and θ = 140⁰

7. What pressure is required to reduce the volume of water by 0.8 percent when
the Bulk modulus of elasticity of water is equal to 2.2 GPa.

8. Nitrogen at 9 m³ and at 24⁰C and 200 kPa absolute is permitted to expand

isothermally to 25 m³.
(a) What is the resulting pressure?
(b) What would be the resulting pressure if the process had been isentropic?
Use K = 1.3
( c) What would be the resulting temperature if the process had been
isentropic, using K = 1.3?
