Video 1 ZAPPOS COMPANY

 Culture
While watching the video, there were four (4) people that being interviewed. All of them were
saying the same things about how positive their workplace is, how their employees can fit in to their
culture, and how they enjoy each other’s company. In the video, you would become aware of how
glad and comfortable they are while being at work, like a family. According to Augusta Scott, they
do really feel cheerful whenever they are working because they love their job and the people inside
the company. Even though, they must concentrate and experienced struggles at work, they
manage to feel bright and light each time their co-workers let them reduces their stress.

 Artifacts of Organizational Culture

o Heroes
CEO – Tony Hsieh
Merchandising Assistant – Amanda Wadsworth
Life Coach – Augusta Scott
“No Title” – Fred Mossler
o Stories
According to their CEO, Tony Hseih, “Some companies were focusing to work-life
separation or work-life balance but for us, we are focusing to work-life integration.”
They used the term work-life integration maybe because the work-life balance
arouses a dual disagreement between work and life. Work-life integration instead is
an addition of the traditional work-life balance method because of there being
conflict among the two areas, work-life integration pursues to merge them in a way
that strengthens both.
o Slogans
Zappos Company says, “Some companies were focusing to work-life separation or
work-life balance but for us, we are focusing to work-life integration.”
o Symbols
Watching the video, there’s a lot of symbols inside the company such as office
decorations, drawings everywhere, pictures hanging up the ceilings, and murals.
Symbols, like artifacts, are things which play a role to remind people in the culture of
its rules, beliefs, etc. They act as a shorthand approach to keep people united.
Symbols can also be used to signify importance within a culture.
o Ceremonies
I have not seen any ceremonies held by the company in the video, but the CEO said
that every time they have to hire new employees, they have to hold interviews where
asking the applying personnel about how well they are in interacting to new people,
if they could fit themselves easily and feel comfortable at any moment, like these.

 Role of Leadership
Leadership in company is the power of a business's management to set and accomplish ambitious
goals, take fast and significant action when needed, outshine the competition, and encourage
others to perform at the peak level they can. The CEO and the other three (3) trusted people inside
their workplace are responsible for guaranteeing that employees are determined by, and dedicated
to, the success of the organization. This includes boosting and keeping confidence by ensuring that
each employee knows the vital role they play in the business and that they are appreciated for their
contribution.

 Inter-Organizational Learning
In our own perspective, positive social relations have a wide variety of both physical and mental
advantages, including enhanced intellectual ability, good mental health, communication skills,
individuality, and better physical health, especially inside the company. All through our lives, the
way we understand to interact with others and build connections has a general impact on not only
our social lives, but our physical, mental, and emotional health as well. That’s why, watching the
first video, their management in the company brought interactive and social community because of
how they handle their employees and letting them feel valued and appreciated. Symbols are used
to convey the opportunities of a given culture to those new to it.

 Cultural Competence
In the video if we have not overlooked it, they have awareness and knowledge that belongs to
multicultural competencies. Awareness is the capability to have a strong understanding of one's
own strengths, flaws, feelings, and opinions. As social workers, we must not only know ourselves
but also be open-minded enough to adapt our thought developments and sympathies to address
the specific needs and certainties of individual employees. Having good knowledge is necessary
for you to carry out good practice because it provides encouragement to the people you support, as
well as to your co-workers. Company needs to be aware of different characteristics of people's lives
to support them the best.
