The clarfied clean oil is discharged under pressure (2) by means of centripetal

the separator A separator is characterized by the bowl for a specific application.Denarator are
to the particulars of the bowl the general operating principles of n e
explained first.

Liquid mixtures or liquid-solids mixtures can be separated

in the gravitational fied of the setling tank or
centrifugal field of the separator,
in the
provided the constituents of the products have differet densities.
As the centrifugal field of the separator is extremely more effective than the ga
tional field of the settling tank, centritugal separatiorn in the separator is muc d
than separation in the settling tank.

The clarifier bowl is used if solids are to be separated out of a liquid.
The operating principle of the clarifier bowl only differs from the purifier bowl in that

the discharge of the heavy liquid phase is closed.

Only solid-liquid separation takes place.

Closing the bowl

After
means
starting the separator, the shut-off device for operating liquid is actuated by
of the control unit.
The operating liquid
flows into the
injection chamber of the bowl bottom and
from there
through inlet holes into the closing chamber.
By this means closing of the bowl is initiated.
The annular piston
moves into closed
position
The liquid pressure in the
closing chamber
raises the sliding
piston,
presses the sliding piston against the
gasket of the bowl bottom, thus
closing the bowl.

Opening the bowl

(ejection)
The shut-off device for
operating liquid is opened by means of the control unit.
The operating liquid
flows first into the ejection chamber and
then into the opening chamber.
The annular piston
rises thus causing
emptying of the closing chamber.
The sliding piston
moves downwards and
opens the ejection ports in the bowl bottom for
discharging the separated solids.
2.3.3 Operating principles The
of the cen tripetal
centripetal pumps discharge the separated liquids under pressure.
The operating principles of the centripetal pump can be compared with
pump that of a
centrifugal pump.
In case of the
centrifugal pump
the impeller fitted with inclined vanes rotates in a stationary casing;
the liquid to be pumped flows from
the inside to the outside through impeller vane
channels.

The reverse is the case with the

cen
tripetal pump:
i t is fixed to the hood of the
separator;
its disc which is provided with chan-
nels is immersed in the
liquid rotating
with the bowl.

P2178005
Fig. 48

The liquid is peeled off by the

from outside, its kinetic energy
centripetal pump and flows into its spiral channels
being converted into pressure energy which is ca-
pable of discharging the liquid under pressure.
At a low
backpressure the depth of immersion of the centripetal pump is smali. It
can, however, be increased by
means it is possible to obtain
throttling the valve in the discharge line. By this
a good liquid seal,
an air- andfoamfree product,
a higher backpressure.

2.3.4 Operatin g principles The centrifuge is driven by a standard

2.3.5 Operating principles The centrifugal clutch

of the cen trifu gal
clutch ensures power transmission between motor, drive belt and spindle,
gradually brings the bowl up to its rated speed,
preserves the drive belt and motor.
The starting current and the starting time can be regulated by the number of clutch
shoes.

details, see section 4.4 Centritugal clutch.

2.4 Operating prin ciples of The liquid to be separated is

the separator plant
sucked out of the tank by a pump via a shut-off device, pre-strainer and pre-set
valve, and
fed to the separator.
The centripetal pump fitted in the bowl feeds the purified light liquid into a tank.
The make-up water required for the separation of liquid mixtures is fed to the separ-
ator in the correct quantity through the water feed line.

Optimum dewatering of oils containing water is only possible if the bowl is

The inner diameter of the

general rule of thumb is:

The milky or dirty appearance of the water is quite normal; it is caused by the oil

A separating zone between the
