DESIGN IF TRANSMISSION SUSTEMS FOR FLENIBLE ELEMENTS

I. FLAT BELTS:-
1. A leather belt 9mm X 250mm is used to drive a cast iron pulley. 900mm in diameter at
336rpm. If the active are on the smaller pulley is 1200 and stress in tight side is 2Mpa, find
the power capacity of the belt. The density of leather may be taken as 980 kg/m 3 and
coefficient if Friction of leather on cast iron is 0.35. [Nov/Dec 2006-R-01, April/May 2010-

2. A 2.5KW of power is transmitted by an open belt drive. The linear velocity of the belt is
2.5m/s. The angle of lap on the smaller pulley is 1650. The co-efficient of friction is 0.3.
Determine the effect on power transmission in the following cases:
a) Initial tension in the belt is increased by 8%.
b) Initial tension in the belt is decreased by8%
c) Angle of lap is increased by 8% by the use of an idler pulley, for the same speed
and the tension on the tight side.
Co-efficient of friction is increased by 8% by suitable dressing to the Friction surface of the

3. Design a flat belt drive to transmit 25KW at 720rpm to an aluminum rolling machine with a
speed reducti9on of 3.0. The distance between the shafts is 3m. Diameter of rolling machine

4. Design a belt drive to transmit 110KW for a system consisting of two pulleys of diameter
0.9m and 1.2m, center distance of 3.6m, a slip of 1.2% at each pulley and 5% friction loss at

Ultimate strength of belt material = 24Mpa, center distance = 2.1m, co-efficient of friction =

10. A flat belt drive is to design to drive a flour mill. The driving power requirements of the mill
are 22.5kW at 750 rpm with a speed reduction of 3.0. The distance between the shafts is 3m.

11. It is required to design a leather crossed belt drive to connect 7.5KW, 1440 rpm electric
motor to a compressor running at 480 rpm the distance between the centers of the pulleys is
twice the diameter of the bigger pulley. The belt should operate at 20m/s approximately and
its thickness is 5mm. Density of leather is 950 kg/m3 and permissible stress is 5.6Mpa.

II. V-BELTS:-
1. A V- belt drive is to transmit 50KW in a heavy duty saw mill which works in two shifts of 8 hrs.
each. The speed of the motor shaft is 1440 rpm with an approximately speed reduction of 2 in the
machine shaft. The peripheral speed of the belt should not exceed 24 m/s. design the drive.

2. A V-belt drive is to transmit 15KW to a compressor. The motor runs at 1150 rpm and the compressor
is to run at 400 rpm. Determine:

8. Design a V-belt drive a machine at 40 rpm from a motor running at 1440 rpm. Assume suitable

9. A V- belt drive is to transmit 45KW in a heavy duty saw mill which works in two shifts of 8 hrs each.
The speed of the motor shaft is 1400 rpm with the approximately speed reduction of 3 in the machine
shaft. Design the drive and calculate the average stress induced in the belt. [May/June 2014-R08]
III. WIRE ROPE:-
1. Select a wire rope for a vertical mine hoist to lift 10,000 KN of coal from a depth of 750 m in each 8
hrs shifts. Assume a two compartment shaft with hoisting skips in balance. Assume rope velocity 750
m/min, acceleration and declaration periods of each 10 sec and rest periods of each 10 sec for
discharging and loading. Assume skip weight to be half of that of the load. E= 8x104 N/mm2.

2. A workshop crane is lifting a load of 25 KN through a wire rope and a hook. The weight of the hook
etc., is 15 KN. The rope drum diameter may be taken as 30 times the diameter of the rope. The load is
to be lifted with an acceleration of 1 m/s2. Calculate the diameter of the wire rope. Take a factor of
safety of 6 and young’s modulus for the wire rope 80 KN/mm2. The ultimate stress may be taken as

3. A crane is used to lift a load of 32KN through wire ropes. Weight of crane hook is 6KN. The load is
to be lifted with an acceleration of 1.2 m/s2. Neglecting self-weight of the rope, design the drive.

4. Select a wire rope for a vertical mine hoist to lift a load of 30KN from a depth of 600mm. A rope

IV. CHAIN DRIVE:-


1. A roller chain drive is used between a driver shaft running at 1000 rpm and a driven shaft running
approximately at 320 rpm. The power transmitted is 10 KW. The drive is to be used for 2 Shifts/ day
with 8 hrs per shift. The center distance is approximately 700 mm and the chain tension can be
adjusted by moving the motor in the rails. Design the drive. [April/May 2004-R01]
2. Design a chain drive to run a compressor from a 11KW electric motor running at 970 rpm, the
compressor speed being 330 rpm. The compressor operates 16 hrs. /day. The center distance should

special purpose machine. Design a suitable roller chain to connect the motor shaft to the gear box
shaft to give an exact speed ratio of 10 to 1. Assume the minimum center distance between driven and

4. A 15 KW squirrel cage motor, 1250 rpm is driving a centrifugal pump at 550 rpm. The centrifugal

5. A blower is to run at 600 rpm. Power to the blower is available from a motor rated 8 KW at 1500

6. The transporter of a heat treatment furnace is driven a 4 KW, 1440 rpm, induction motor through a
chain drive with a speed reduction ratio of 2.4. The transmission is horizontal with of
lubrication. Rating is continuous with 3 shifts per day. Determine complete chain drive assuming

7. Design a chain driver to active a compressor from a 15 KW electric motor at 960 rpm. The
compressor speed is 300 rpm. The chain tension may be adjusted by shifting the motor on rails. The

8. Design a chain drive to transmit 6 KW at 900 rpm of a sprocket pinion. Speed reduction is 2:5:1.

9. A truck equipped with a 9.5KW engine uses a roller chain as the final drive to the rear axle. The

10. Design a chain drive to drive a centrifugal compressor from an electric motor 15 KW at 1000 rpm.
The speed reduction ratio required is 2.5. The compressor to work for 16 hrs/ day. State solutions for
