Lesson Content

What is GRAPHIC DESIGN?

Graphic design is a process that combines text and images with the use of technology, such as
computers,

that focuses on visual communication. Visual communication is a communication that conveys ideas and

information in forms that can be read or looked upon such as visual aids. The graphic designer works
with a variety

of communication tools in order to convey a message from a client to a particular audience.

What does a GRAPHIC DESIGNER do?

A graphic designer creates books, websites, magazines, film titles, catalogs, signs, television graphics,

posters and postcards. From complex identity programs to single logos, graphic designers give a face
and a “visual
voice” to retail and cultural enterprises, to entertainment, manufacturing and service industries,
governmental and

political interests. Simply put, graphic designers give meaningful visual form to content in all media:
from print to

screen; business cards to billboards; computer interfaces to movie screens. But the most critical skill that
a graphic

designer offers is the unique ability that he/she has to communicate specific messages through the
artful

manipulation of typography and images. Their work always promotes, educates, directs, informs,
exposes, clarifies,

beautifies and delights.

Elements of Graphic Design

1. Line

Line is the mark made by a moving point, such as a pencil or brush. It is the basic component of a shape

drawn on paper. Lines and curves are the basic building blocks of two dimensional shapes like a house's

plan.

2. Color

Color is the most expressive element of art and is seen by the way light reflects off a surface. Color is

used to create illusion of depth, as red colors seem to come forward while blue seems to go backwards.

Color, particularly contrasting color, is also used to draw the attention to a particular part of the image.

3. Shape

Shape is an area enclosed by lines or curves. It is a two-dimensional area that is defined by a change in

value or some other form of contrast. All shapes are two-dimensional, meaning that they have only

length and width. All shapes will fall into one of two categories. Geometric shapes or regular shapes are

easy to recognize.
