SOCIAL MEDIA HAS MADE US LESS SOCIABLE

Nowadays, social media is the platform that makes daily communication

among people all over the world a lot more easier compared to the previous
generation. Since this particular platform have not exists in the past, the people
tend to meet each other to communicate, having conversation or even inform
and announce any news they got. These days, the majority of people do have
their own social media account which enables them to easily communicate, find
new friends and be socialize even more as this platform connect more people
effortlessly. Hence, I do agree that we are less sociable nowadays due to social
media which contributes to lack of face-to-face interaction, problems with
offline relationships as well as being the victim of cyberbully on social media.
First of all, people who spend too much times on social media are likely to
make less face-to-face interaction. It can be said that, they are used to have
communication through social media which is fine for them to not show any
expressions and reactions when communicating with people on that platform.
By attending any gatherings or events for school for example, they tend to not
interact with people around them due to the fear of being judged by not having
people’s desired reaction and social skills. Instead, they will simply being on their
phone all the time to look busy so that no one will talk to them which is what
they want. This means that, social media will eventually make their social skills
worse and hard for them to make friends with others in the future.
Besides that, the use of social media sometimes might cause problems
with peoples’ offline relationships. This is because, most people who use social
media will have the desire to show their happiness, love life and success on that
particular platform which they think will make them feel good about
themselves. However, when they start to share everything on social media,
there would be some toxic people on the media who are full of jealousy will ruin
everything to make the individual feel down. For instance, they might eventually
start a conversation with the individual’s relatives through social media and
spread rumours about them which make them to take unnecessary actions
immediately instead of getting into conversation. Being less sociable for social
media will definitely ruined the offline relationship.
Finally, another cause of being less sociable is because they have been
experienced cyberbullying through social media. By keeping everyone update
with their life or even posting unnecessary things in the media sometimes makes
people annoyed and decided to attack that particular user. This can be seen
when random user who they do not even know leave hurtful comments or
threats on their post on social media. In the end, it will cause depression as well
as social anxiety due to the mindset of being dislike by everyone around them.
Thus, having these kind of mental state can also lead them to be a less sociable
person and introvert.
To conclude, it is truly ironic how all these social media sites are designed
to bring us closer and more connected than ever before. However, we, as the
people who using it are actually the ones to blame for why we are becoming less
sociable. By constantly using social media, we are isolating ourselves to primarily
connecting through the virtual world rather than in person and we are simply
missing important life experience that are not available in virtual form.
Therefore, I agree that social media has made us less social which also lead to
lack of face-to-face interaction, problems with offline relationships as well as
being the victim of cyberbully on social media.
