Homework # 2 - M3

Design a directional well (Type I) to intersect two targets without any direction correction. Find the
needed toll face position at KOP (azimuth). Plot the well on the horizontal plane and on
the vertical plane that contains the surface location and Target 2. Also estimate the minimum
production casing length necessary considering that the well will be drilled 500 ft beyond the
top of Target 2. The targets have the following requirements:

Target 1:
Direction – S 83.6o E
Horizontal departure – 3120 ft
Vertical depth of the top of target – 9936 ft
Tolerance radius – 150 ft

Target 2:
Direction – S 81.2o E
Horizontal departure – 3744 ft
Vertical depth of the top of target – 10583 ft
Tolerance Radius – 100 ft

Other needed data:

KOP depth - 5500 ft
Bit walk - 0.5o/100 ft (right)
Build-up rate - 2o/30 m

This problem is an adaptation of Exercise 8.14 of the textbook “Applied Drilling Engineering”,
Bourgoyne et. al.

Hints:

1) Estimate the maximum inclination angle: find it, using vertical depths and departures of the targets

2) Calculate the N and E coordinates of the targets:

3) Prepare a spreadsheet (like the one you saw in class - 3D design). Assume a toolface angle at KOP (well
direction at KOP)

4) Calculate at both target vertical depths, the distances from the designed well and the target using
the equation: Distance = SQRT( (Nwell - Ntarget)2 + (Ewell - Etarget)2)

5) Verify if both calculated distances are within the target’s radius of tolerance.
If so, this is the desired 3D trajectory of the well. If not, assume another TF angle and keep iterating until you find
the right angle.

6) Plot the designed well trajectory on the horizontal and vertical (that contains the surface location and Target 2)
planes

7) Add 500 ft to the measured depth of the top of Target 2 to find the production casing length necessary.
