ENGAGE
Mark’s daily allowance is ₱ 40.00. He spends ₱ 12.00 for snacks this is 30%
of his daily allowance. Identify which information represents the percentage, the
rate and the base.
EXPLORE

In the situation given above, we can say that. 30% of ₱ 40.00 is ₱ 12.00. In this case,
we can easily identify when the percentage, the rate or the base is. We let P be the
percentage. R be the rate, and B be the base.

₱12.00 is the percentage (P) → It is the number or the amount that represent a
part of a whole.
30% is the rate (R) → It is the number compared to 100. It usually has
either a percent sign (%) or the word “percent” with it.
₱40.00 is the base (B) → It is the number that represents the whole or the
entire amount.

EXPLAIN

-The situation above can also be describes as:

30% of 40 is 12 → 30% x 40 = 12

Rate (R) x Base (B) = Percentage (P)

Based on this, we can now generate formula for finding the percentage (P), the rate
(R), and the base (B). Percents are a ratio of a number and 100. So they are easier to
compare than fractions, as they always have the same denominator, 100. A store may
have a 10% off sale. The amount saved is always the same portion or fraction of the
price, but a higher price means more money is taken off. Interest rates on a saving
account work in the same way. The more money you put in your account, the more
money you get in interest. It’s helpful to understand how these percents are calculated.

ERCENTAGE (P=BxR) – The result obtained when a number is multiplied by a percent.

BASE (B=P/R) – The whole in a problem. The amount you are taking a percent of.

RATE (R=P/B) – The ratio of amount to the base. It is written as a percent.

Example.

Finding the Percentage (Proportion)

Percentage Rate and Base

Formula
Percentage of Increase = Base + (Base x Rate)
Percentage of Decrease = Base - (Base x Rate)
Percentage = Rate x Base or P= R x B (Formula 4-1)

Rate = Percentage/ Base or R = P/B (Formula 4-2)

Base = Percentage/ Rate or B= P/R ( Fomula 4-3 )

Example 1.285 increase by 30%?

Solution;
Given: Rate = 36% = 0.36 Base = 285
Percentage of Decrease = Base + (Base x Rate)
= 285 + (285 x 0.36)
= 285 + 102.6
= 387.6
Example. What is 30 percent of 250?

Solution : Since the Problem says' percent of 250, "the base is 250. The rate is 30%.
From the formula:

Percentage = Rate x Base = 30% x 250 = 0.35 x 250 =75

Thus, 75 is 30% of 250.

ELABORATE

To explain the cases that arise in problems involving percents, it is necessary to define

the terms that will be used. Rate (r) is the number of hundredths parts taken. This is the
number followed by the percent sign. The base (b) is the whole on which the rate
operates. Percentage (p) is the part of the base determined by the rate. In the example

Situation; Camilo has saved save ₱3, 150.00 in the past 3 months. If the bike he wanted
to buy is worth ₱9,000. What percent of the cost of the bike has saved?

Understand

a. what is asked?

The percent of the bike’s account that camilo has save. We are looking for the rate.

b. What are the given facts?

He save ₱3,150.00. the bike is worth ₱9,000.00

Plan

Apply the concept of proportion to find the percent of the cost of the bike.

Solve

percentage
Rate =
Base

100 x 3150

n = 3150 → n: 100 = 3150; 9000

100 9000 n x 9000

n x 9000=100 x 3150

9000n = 315 000

9000 9000

n= 35

Answer: Camilo has save 35% of the cost of the bike.

Check

This is once way to know if the solution is correct. Let us find 35% of ₱9,000.

9000
x 0.35
3150.00 → this is the amount camilo has saved.
EVALUATE

A. Solve the following mentally.

1. 1 is what percent of 10?
2. 10 is what percent of 20?
3. 3 is what percent of 12?
4. 5 is what percent of 25?
5. 7.5 is what percent of 75?
6. 12.5 is what percent of 50?
7. What percent of 45 is 9?
8. What percent of 300 is 75?
9. What percent of 125 is 250?
10. What percent of 250 is 100?

IV. Assignment
-For your assignment in ½ sheet of paper answer this.

Andrea has save ₱5,250 in the past 6 months. If the phone she wanted to buy is
worth ₱10,000, what percent of the cost of the phone has she saved?
