D. Presenting Percentages are frequently used in a variety of contexts. For instance, many statistics in the
examples / media, bank interest rates, retail discounts, and inflation rates are all expressed as percentages.
instances of the For understanding the financial aspects of daily life, percentages are crucial.
new lesson

E. Discussing new We often encounter percentage, rate and base in daily life. We see percentages as discounts in
concepts and prices of clothes, shoes, meat products, grocery items and even in fruits. Percentages are like
practicing new fractions and decimals. They are ways to describe what proportion of a whole is represented
skills #1 by a number. Percentage is a term from Latin, meaning “out of one hundred”. We can
consider a “whole” broken up into 100 equal parts, each part is a single percent. Percentage
represents a part of the base. The base is the number that represents the whole or the 100
percent. The rate defines what part the percentage is of the base.
F. Discussing new To aid us in finding the terms, we will use the Teehan’s Triangle below.
concepts and
practicing new
skills #2

To solve for the percentage, we use the formula: 𝑃𝑒𝑟𝑐𝑒𝑛𝑡𝑎𝑔𝑒 (𝑃) = 𝐵𝑎𝑠𝑒 (𝐵) × 𝑅𝑎𝑡𝑒 (𝑅)

To solve for the base, we use this formula:

𝐵𝑎𝑠𝑒 (𝐵) = Percentage (P)Rate (R)

Then, to solve for the rate, we will use:

𝑅𝑎𝑡𝑒 (𝑅) = Percentage (P)Base (B)

Example 1 (Finding the Percentage)

What is 50% of 250?

𝑃 = 𝐵 × 𝑅 = 250 x 50% (remove the percent symbol, change to decimal) = 250 x 0.50 = 125

Remember, the preposition “of” means multiplication.

Example 2 (Finding the Base)

300 is 75% of what number?

𝐵𝑎𝑠𝑒 (𝐵) = Percentage (P)Rate (R)

𝐵𝑎𝑠𝑒 (𝐵) = 3000.75

 (convert 75% to decimal)

B = 400

Example 3 (Finding the Rate)

What percent of 600 is 30?
𝑅𝑎𝑡𝑒 (𝑅) = Percentage (P)Base (B)
𝑅𝑎𝑡𝑒 (𝑅) = 30600
R = 0.05
R = 5%

Let us study the following problem.

 Daniel collects limited edition cards from a popular coffee shop. Twenty of his cards were
traded from his friend in other country. If he has a total of 160 cards in all, what percent of his
cards were traded from his friend in other country?

In this problem, we will identify the following terms.

Percentage (P) is the number of cards which were traded by Daniel from his friend in other
country and is equal to 20.
Base (B) is the total number of cards which is equal to 160.
Rate (R) is asked in the problem.
G. Developing Have the pupils work in group. The teacher gives problem statements wherein the pupils
Mastery (Leads to      Identify the rate, base and percentage:
Formative Group 1:
Assessment) Paolo listen very well to the teacher during the discussion of the lesson. When they were
given a 5-itm test he got 4 correct answer. He has a grade of 80%.
Group 2:
There are 40 pupils in a class. Seventy-five percent of them are present. 30 pupils are present.
Group 3:
Monique invited 300 kids to her party. Only 15% of the kids did not showedup.Forty-five kids
did not attend the party.
Group 4:
Shiela got 90% of a 20-item test in Science. She answers 18 item correctly.

Skills in Daily
Lives

I. Making Rate is the number written with the word “percent”. It is express in percent form.
Generalization Base is the total or whole and it is the number that usually follows the phrase “percent”.
and Abstraction Percentage is the part of the whole.
Techan’s Triangle is also used in identifying rate, base and percentage.

Evaluating Learning Direction: Identify the rate, base, or percentage in the following problems.
1. 50% of 78 = 39
2. 10% of 60 = 6
3. A 20% or P 4 600 is the down payment for a brand new TV set. The original price
of the
    TV set is P 23 000.
4. Carlo invest P 750 000 at 6  % simple interest a year. His interest is P 48 750.
5. Melissa has 120 kilograms of rice. Her mother sold 105 kilograms. Is she right to
tell her mother sold 87.5% of what she sold?

  Identify the R, B, and P in the following statement.

1. 180% of 200 is 360
2. 35% of 90 is 31.5
3. P 100 is 4% of P2 500
4. 51 children, 66  % of them are boys, 34 are boys
