Third Quarter Module 2

Week 2
Introductory Message
For the facilitator:

This module was collaboratively designed, developed and evaluated by the Development
and Quality Assurance Teams of SDO TAPAT to assist you in helping the learners meet
the standards set by the K to 12 Curriculum while overcoming their personal, social, and
economic constraints in schooling.

As a facilitator, you are expected to orient the learners on how to use this module. You
also need to keep track of the learners' progress while allowing them to manage their own
learning. Furthermore, you are expected to encourage and assist the learners as they do
the tasks included in the module.

For the learner:

This module was designed to provide you with fun and meaningful opportunities for
guided and independent learning at your own pace and time. You will be enabled to
process the contents of the learning resource while being an active learner.

The following are some reminders in using this module:

1. Use the module with care. Do not put unnecessary mark/s on any part of the
module. Use a separate sheet of paper in answering the exercises.
2. Don’t forget to answer What am I good at? before moving on to the other activities
included in the module.
3. Read the instruction carefully before doing each task.
4. Observe honesty and integrity in doing the tasks and checking your answers.
5. Finish the task at hand before proceeding to the next.
6. Return this module to your teacher/facilitator once you are through with it.
If you encounter any difficulty in answering the tasks in this module, do not hesitate
to consult your teacher or facilitator. Always bear in mind that you are not alone.

We hope that through this material, you will experience meaningful learning and gain
deep understanding of the relevant competencies. You can do it!
What’s my target

What will I do?

Activity 1 What is 15% of 45?
Activity 2 Stephen is a diligent student. He never skips studying his lessons every night.
When he took their 50-item quarterly examination, he got 96% of it correctly.
What is his score?
Activity 3 At a party, there were 90 women and 80% times as many men as women. There
were 14 more children than adults. How many children were at the party?

What’s the meaning?

Explanation to Activity 1
In solving percentage problems, the elements that we need to identify first are the rate, the base
and the percentage.
Rate (R) = 15% =0.15
Base (B) = 45
The missing element is the percentage (P)

To find percentage of a given problem, change the rate to decimal then use the formula:
P=RxB (Percentage = Rate x Base)
Just substitute the given in the formula.
P=RxB
= 15% x 45
=0.15 x 45
= 6.75
Answer: 15% of 45 is 6.75

Solution:
0.15 Multiply like whole numbers.
x 45 2 decimal places
075 Then put the decimal point in the answer - it will have as many
60 2 decimal places
decimal places as the two original numbers combined.
6.75

Another way of finding the percentage in a given problem is to change the rate from percent to
fraction. Example: What is 75% of 16
3
R = 75% = B=16 P=? Identify the (P) percentage, (B) base and (R)rate – (change
4
the percent to fraction)
P=RxB Transform the problem in equation form. P = R x B
3
= x16
4
3 16
= 𝑥 Change the whole number as a fraction with a denominator of 1
4 1
4
3 16 Use cancellation method if possible or multiply both
= x numerators and multiply both denominators.
41 1

3𝑥4 12
= = = 12 Simplify
1𝑥1 1

Answer: 75% of 16 = 12
Explanation to Activity 2
To solve routine problems involving percentage, follow these steps:
● Understand
Know what is asked: The number of items Stephen answered correctly.
Know the given facts: Identify the (P)percentage, (B) base and (R)rate
B = 50 R = 96% = 0.96 P=?
● Plan
Transform the problem in equation form. P = R x B
P = 0.96 x 50
● Solve
P = 0.96 x 50
= 48
Show your solution:
0.96 Multiply just like whole numbers.
X 50
2 decimal places
000 Then put the decimal point in the answer - it will have
480 2 decimal places
as many decimal places as the two original numbers
48.00 combined.

• Check and Look Back. See if your answer makes sense. State the complete answer.
Answer: Stephen got 48 correct answers in a 50-item test.
Explanation to Activity 3:
A non-routine problem is any complex problem that requires some degree of creativity or
originality to solve. These problems do not have an immediately apparent strategy for solving them
which can be solved in multiple ways.
To answer activity 3 we can use illustration:
100%

Women 9 9 9 9 9 9 9 9 9 9 = 90

Men 9 9 9 9 9 9 9 9 = 72

Adults 80% 162

+ 14
Children 176

Answer: There are 176 children in the party.

What’s more to do?

Directions: Find the percentage of each.
1. What is 40% of 50? _____
2. 75% x 360 = N. What is N? _____
3. Find 12% of 200. _____
4. Get 25% of 96. _____
5. 2% of 150 is what number? _____
Directions: Read the following problems carefully and provide the solution for each.
1. Out of 200 school days, 62% were rainy days. How many days are rainy days?
2. Our neighbor has 60 plants. 60% of it are rose plants. How many are rose plants?
3. There are 50 workers in a restaurant. 40% of them are female. How many male are
working in the restaurant?
