Introduction of the Topic

Circle graphs or Pie Graphs show the relationship of the parts of the whole. We
used this graph if we want to compare one quantity with the whole data. In this case
all data are considered as whole data (100%) and each quantity as a part or a
percentage of the whole data. The pie graph, in particular, is a type of graph that is
useful in analyzing polls, and money or resource allocations.

MATH 6 QUARTER 4 WEEK 4 P a g e 3|9

Lesson 1: Present the problem.

The members of the Math Club elected their officers. There are 4 candidates for president
and 100 members voted.

Joy – 35 votes

Ronald – 28 votes

Carol – 22 votes

Miguel – 15 votes

A. To construct a pie graph, follow these steps:

Step 1: Find the percent of vote that each candidate has received.

35
Joy – = 0.35 or 35%
100

28
Ronald – = 0.28 or 28%
100

22
Carol – = 0.22 or 22%
100

15
Miguel – = 0.15 or 15%
100

Step 2: Determine how many degrees correspond to each percent. The whole circle
measures 360º.

35% of 360 = 0.35 x 360º = 126º

28% of 360 = 0.28 x 360º = 100.8 round to 101º

22% of 360 = 0.22 x 360º = 79.2 round to 79º

15% of 360 = 0.15 x 360º = 54º

Step 3: Draw a circle. Determine the center and draw a

radius. Use a protractor with the center as the vertex and
the radius as a side, measure any of the angles found in
step 2. Then draw a line to show the division.

d. Use a protractor with the center as the vertex and the radius as a side, measure any of the
angles found in Step 2. Then draw a line to show the division.

MATH 6 QUARTER 4 WEEK 4 P a g e 4|9

Step 4: Label the sectors and put a title to your graph.
Title: Distribution of Votes per Candidate for President

B. Answer the following questions based on the pie graph.

1. Who earned the highest percentage of vote for president?
2. Who earned the lowest percentage of vote for president?
3. How many percent of vote did Carol get?
4. What is the difference between the percentage vote of Joy and Miguel?
5. What is the total percentage of votes of Ronald and Carol?

spent it for the following: 50% for food, 15% for fare, 30% for others, 5% for savings.
B. How much is spent for each category?

Remember

To construct a pie graph, follow these steps:

Step 1: Find the percent of the whole amount is each part of the data.

Step 2: Determine how many degrees correspond to each percent. The whole circle
measures 360º.

Step 3: Draw a circle. Determine the center and draw a radius. Use a protractor with the
center as the vertex and the radius as a side, measure any of the angles found in step 2.
Then draw a line to show the division.

Step 4: Label the sectors and put a title to your graph.
