Upgrading S320(V2) Board Software

1. Upgrading NCP Board Software

1) The GdownLoad program is used to upgrade the program of NCP board. First, Set an IP
address on a PC and make sure it is in the same network segment with 192.192.192.11
255.255.255.0.

2) Press “BELL OFF” switch on the NCP board to reset the NCP board. The NCP board enters
the DOWNLOAD status when the indicator on the NCP board flashes for 3 times.

3) Use the crossover cable to connect the computer network interface to Qx interface of S320
(V2), and ping through 192.192.192.11.

4) As shown in Figure 2-1, start the GDOWNLOAD program. At DesIP, enter: 192.192.192.11.
Click Connect to connect to the NCP board. The system prompts successful connection and
displays system parameters when successfully connected.

5) At Area Type, select PrgArea 1, and then click Erase to erase the old program. After erasion,
select Bin at File Type and the File Name to be downloaded, e.g., ncpnd1516V201-
020829_ip.BIN. Click Download to download the NCP program. See Figure 2-2.

Note: The main program is the special program provided by the ZTE. Make sure that the
version is correct before downloading!

6) If the database format of the new program needs to be changed as well to match the new
NMS, the NCP database area data should be erased. Select PrgArea1 at Area Type, and then
erase the database. After clicking Erase, a dialog box pops up as following. Select Yes, then
the program erases the database area automatically.

Figure 2-3

7) Click NetCfg to open the Net Para Config dialog box. At the NE IP text box, enter the IP
address of the NE, e.g., “188.86.6.18”. At the NE IP Mask text box, enter the subnet mask,
e.g., “255.255.255.0”; at NE MAC(HEX), input the physical address, e.g., “88 86 6”. See
Figure 2-4.

Configuration principle of NE physical address: Ensure that the physical addresses of all NCPs
in the same network are different. Set them as required.

8) After configuration is complete, click system information to check whether the configuration
is correct. Then click Reset to exit the GDownLoad program. After the NCP runs, the IP
configured just now is available.

9) Similarly, configure an IP address on the PC making it in the same network segment with the
NE and check that the NE can be pinged through from the PC IP. Then start the NMS, log on
to it, and download the NCP database to the ZXMP S320 NE when the icon of this NE
becomes active.

10) Select System/NCP Data Management/DownloadDB, and check the Select NE to see
whether it is the expected one.

11) (Important) In DB File Name, only select NE information and Card Config and click Apply
The associated tables will be downloaded automatically afterwards. See Figure 2-5.

12) After the downloading is complete, NCP will reset automatically. Wait till the NE icon
changes from dashed lines into solid lines, that is, the NCP time is retrieved. And go on
waiting for another two or three seconds until the NCP has been started completely. Select all
items expect for NE information and Card Config in the DB file name list to download all of
the rest tables. It is recommended to Select all the files first and then remove the ticks before
NE information and Card Config.

13) After NCP data is downloaded and NCP time is retrieved, the process of NCP software
upgrade is complete.

2. Upgrading SFE4 Board Program

1) Use SfeDownLoad program and special download cable to upgrade NCP board program.
First, set an IP address on a PC and make sure it is in the same network segment with
192.192.192.16 255.255.255.0.

2) Flip all DIP switches of Sfe4 to OFF. Connect the download cable to the pin of X1 of SFE4.
Note that the one with a circle marked on X1 is the first pin. Please connect the download
cable to pin 1 (red cable) at one end and at the other end to the PC network interface via RJ45
port by a crossover cable.

3) Insert Sfe4 board into the subrack. Make sure the PC is able to ping through 192.192.192.16
when it runs.

4) Click Connect. After it gets connected, select Program Area at Area Type, and then click
Erase. See Figure 2-6.

Then, select HEX at File Type, click the navigation bar “…” at the right of File Name to select the
file to be downloaded, e.g. ZXMP S320V2_SFE4_LV1.00.171(2003-10-25).hex.

Click Download. (See Figure 2-8)

Note: The main program is the special program provided by the ZTE. Make sure that the
version is correct before downloading!

6) Download the file.

7) Upon completion of downloading, click Reset to exit. Draw out Sfe4 from the subrack.
Disconnect the download cable carefully, and flip the DIP switch1 back to ON. The upgrade
of Sfe4 board program is finished.

3. Upgrading Other Board Software

In the ZXMP S320 system, the NCP and Sfe4 can be upgraded with network cables, the PWA does
not need program upgrading, but all the rest boards should upgrade their program by replacing the
programmable logic chip or the FPGA.

1) Required tools: chip extractor, flat mini-screw driver, chip downloaded with new program
and label paper.

2) The following description takes ET1 board upgrade as an example.

3) The first step is to wear the antistatic wrist strap because of contact with board.

4) Draw out the board with care; place it on the surface of a smooth desk or platform free of
impurities. Then the FPGA chip to be replaced is right in slot D1 with a label paper
specifying the old software date adhered on it (Chips of other boards are in different slots
individually, but each type of board has only one programmable chip or FPGA, which is
identified by a label paper.)

5) Align a chip extractor or a flat mini-screw driver with the chip notch; apply force evenly to
pull the chip out.

6) Press the new FPGA chip downwards along the slot; apply force evenly to install it in place.
The shape of chip is square with one angle of the square cut slantwise to distinguish it from
the other three angles. This design is to prevent from inverse instillation.

7) Check whether the software version specified on the label paper of the new chip is correct.
Write one label manually and stick it on top of the chip if there is no label paper on it.

8) Take the old chip away. Insert the board back to the slot. Power on the board and the green
indicator flashes slowly, which indicates the program is running.

9) The board software upgrade is finished.
