Course Objectives: The course objectives are to educate engineering students in

fundamental of smart grid system, smart metering, real-time pricing, modeling,
integration and control of renewable and green energy through conceptual
presentation and animation. Course Description: In this course, an application
oriented method of basic of smart grid system will be presented. The course will
present smart metering, real time pricing, load frequency control, load following
electric loads, control of renewable energy systems, and integration in electric
power systems.

Week 2 Basic conceptual animation presentation of power system, real time
pricing, smart metering, smart grid systems, control of interconnected multi
sources distributed electric energy systems, normal, alert and emergency operation,
economic dispatch, and automatic generation control (two lectures)
Week 3. Modeling of distributed energy systems elements, transformers, active
and reactive loads and power converters.(two lectures)
Week 4. Basic conceptual presentation and of energy processing in renewable
sources such as, wind power plants, photovoltaics power plants, solar thermal
power plants, and green energy sources, such as microturbines power plants. (two
lectures)

Grading: Homework (10%); Quizzes (20%); Midterm I (20%); Midterm II(
20%) ; Final (20%)
• Homework must be turned in to the TA at the beginning of the class on
the due date. Late submissions will not be accepted after the due date.
Failure to turn in homework by deadline leads to zero point for the
assignment.
• All quizzes, midterms, final examinations are open book, open notes.
• All quizzes, midterms, final examinations in this course will be
administered in accordance with the ECE Honor Systems. If you have a
question about the ECE Honor Systems, contact your instructor or a
member of the ECE Student Council.
