TOPIC 1: Nature’s Numbers

At the end of this lesson the students
1. define and observe mathematics in nature, country, family and self
2. patiently, follow instruction and discuss patterns in shape, rhythm, color etc.
3. appreciate mathematics as applied in chosen specialized program

How far can you continue thanking God? Add more blessings that you
have received following the pattern
Numbered Prayer
Oh, Most Almighty One whom have brought my life with fun, I thank thee
for giving me parents of two who guide, love and protect me ‘til I grew
thee may be known in persons of three, and everywhere your presence I see
for thy cardinal virtues of four, the basis on the path and decisions I favor
.
.
.
For the infinite blessings that you provide, allow my humble heart give praise and in thy Will I abide. AMEN

God created the nature comprising of the universe where earth belongs.
The earth is made up of the sky, land and water. But, how did God make
his creation? Does nature need numbers? Is mathematics always
present in nature? Is mathematics as old as nature? How is mathematics observed in nature? Does God play
dice?

Does God play dice? Are his creation existed by chance or there is a
Divine Plan that anything that happens need really to happen?

In the universe, one of its systems makes the sun as the center where planets do revolve around while rotate
on their respective axis, following a pattern. This system is called the solar system. The shape of the objects
inside it, also has pattern. Some are symmetrical (when divided into half one is a reflection of the other) and
others are asymmetrical (cannot be divided into two similar parts). Also, the planets move in a pattern called
rhythm. Like, the earth is an example of spherical symmetry revolving around the sun at a rhythm of 365 days,
5 hours, 59 minutes and 16 seconds and a linear distance of 1.4959826 x 10 8 km
Go out and look up, it is the sky that you will see. You will see clouds that are made of water or ice. Most
clouds are asymmetrical and it is formed and moves in pattern. Its color from clear to darkness has meaning
and can be measured. At night, you will see stars that goes in pattern called constellation. Its brightness are
measurable and so with their distances from one another. Their shapes are seen by the naked eye and drawn
radially symmetrical.
At land, some forms are perceived and drawn to be radially symmetrical like mountains and hills though
in actual they are asymmetrical. Their heights, surface areas and even volumes are measurable. Other land
forms are valleys, plateaus, plains, loess, and deserts. In the Philippines, the tallest mountain is Mt Apo rising
to 9,692 feet (2,954 meters). Cavite City is known to mountaineers’ with her three famous mountains, namely:
Mount Pico de Loro at Ternate Cavite, Mount Marami at Maragondon Cavite and Mount Sungay at Tagaytay
Cavite. In Bohol, it is said that there are more than 1,268 hills spread over an area of 50 square kilometers.
The heights ranges from 30 to 120 meters.
At water, the forms are asymmetrical because it only follow the shape of the basin that holds it. Some of
its forms are oceans, lakes, waterfalls, rivers, streams, glaciers and ponds. They follow rhythm forming
splashes and other water phenomena. Pacific Ocean is the largest covering at about 63 million square miles

holding more than half of the water of the earth. The deepest part of the ocean is the Challenger Deep part of
Pacific Ocean that has a depth of 36,200 ft. The Cagayan River also referred as Rio Grande de Cagayan is the
Philippine longest river covering 314 miles. The tallest and most beautiful waterfalls in the Philippines is the
Aliwagwag Falls at Cateel Davao Oriental with a reach of 1,110 ft and more than 100 cascading waterfalls.
Mathematics and Life Forms
As retrieved from http://www.ric.edu/faculty/ptiskus/six_kingdoms/, life has 6 kingdoms, namely: plants,
animals, protists, fungi, archaebacteria, eubacteria.
In the plants kingdom, most are asymmetric but their fruits, leaves and flowers are oftentimes symmetrical.
Apples, oranges, pineapples are radial symmetric. Bananas, eggplants and mangoes are bilateral symmetric.
Watermelon is spherical symmetric. Most of the flowers are radial symmetric and the number of petals follow
the Fibonacci sequence (1, 1, 2, 3, 5, 8, 13, . . . ). Calla Lilies have 1 petal making it bilateral symmetric.
Mariposa Lily has 3 petals, buttercups have 5, delphiniums have 8, ragworts have 13, asters have 21, daisies
have 34 . . . making these flowers radial symmetric.
In the animal kingdom, most are bilateral symmetric and movements and sounds follow a rhythm.
Butterflies, dogs, cats, tigers and even human beings are bilateral symmetric where the left partition is
approximately equal to the right partition or we can say that the left is a reflection of right part when divided
into two in its symmetry. Butterflies fly in rhythm where the wings go together up, down, up, down . . . pattern.
Man walks in rhythm that may start with left foot then right, left, right, left, . . . pattern. Their adult heart rate
also called pulse normally ranges from 60 to 100 beats per minute and the normal blood pressure ranges
from120/80 mmHg to 139/89 mmHg. Starfishes, jellyfishes are normally radial symmetric and other sea
creatures are bilateral symmetric.
5Ws and H of Mathematics
What is mathematics? Mathematics is the study of patterns in shapes, textures, rhythms, colors , etc. Those
patterns are determined abstractly by numbers and represented by numerals. It is the thingification of concepts
and processes.
When does mathematics existed? Even before life, mathematics already existed and evident in the existence
of patterns. Today, mathematics is still observed in daily lives. The amount of ox ygen we breathe, the way we
act, think and feel, the number of days we live, the food we take, the technology we develop, . . . are all because
of mathematics that even in the future, still it is meaningful.
Where is mathematics seen? Mathematics is everywhere. It is in the universe, sky, land, wate r, countries,
communities, families and even self.
Who uses mathematics? God used mathematics. Ancient philosophers such as Euclid of Alexandria
considered as The Father of Geometry, Pythagoras of Samos famous in Pythagorean Theorem, Archimedes
of Syracuse known for antiquity, Thales of Miletus known for other geometrical principles, Aristotle of Stagira
known in his time as The Man who Knew Everything and later as The Philosopher, Diophantus of Alexandria
known as The Father of Algebra, and others. Rene Descartes designed a tool that could represent shapes using
points in a plane called Cartesian plane. It was followed by the 3 -dimensional representation of objects called
xyz space and the trigonometric plane called polar coordinate system. The presen t computer technologists use
mathematics to improve the digital technology. The doctors, architects, engineers, teachers, carpenters,
fishermen, maids . . . all uses mathematics.
Why is mathematics needed? Mathematics is very essential in our daily living including decision making,
prediction, analysis and critical thinking. It puts order in disorder. It helps us become better persons. It helps
the world a better place to live in
PRIMO VILLANUEVA, JR LPT Mathematics in M odern World P a g e | 3

How is mathematics done? Mathematics is done with curiosity, with a penchant for seeking patterns and
generalities, with a desire to know the truth, with trial and error, without fear of facing more questions and
problems to solve, with tenacity (willingness to keep working) . . .

Using the provided graph sheet, follow the given instructions. Describe what
you have found out!

1. In 20 mins, locate the square at 27th column and 38th row. Draw 1x1 square. At its right draw another 1x1
square. Below the two 1x1 squares, draw 2x2 square. At the left of the first 1x1 and 2x2 squares, draw 3x3
square. Above the 3x3 and two 1x1 squares, draw 5x5 square. At the right of the 5x5, 1x1 and 2x2 squa res,
draw 8x8 square. Below 8x8, 2x2 and 3x3 squares, draw 13x13 square. At the left of 13x13, 3x3 and 5x5
squares, draw 21x21 square.
2. Using compass, point the pin at the bottom right corner of the first square, point the pencil at the lower left
of the first square, create a semi-circle up to the bottom right corner of the second square.
3. Move the pin at the upper left corner of the 2x2 square, connecting at the end of the created semi -circle,
draw an arc up to the bottom left corner of the 2x2 square.
4. Move the pin at the upper right corner of the 3x3 square, connecting at the end of the created curve, draw
an arc up to its upper left corner.
5. Move the pin at the bottom right corner of the 5x5 square, connecting on the curve, draw an arc up to it s
upper right corner.
6. Move the pin at the bottom left corner of the 8x8 square, connecting at the curve, draw an arc up to its
bottom right corner
7. Move the pin at the upper left corner of the 13x13 square, connecting at the end of the created curve, draw
an arc up to its bottom left corner.
8. Move the pin at the upper right corner of the 21x21 square, connecting on the curve, draw an arc up to its
upper left corner.
9. Move the pin at the lower right corner of the 34x34 square, connecting at the curve, draw an arc up to the
top border of TS002.
10. Using your favorite color, hardly shade the curve. Lightly color each squares with different colors. DO
NOT COLOR THE 34X34 SQUARE.
11. At the upper right space of the sheet, answer the following questio ns; What sequence is applied? What has
it shown? What in nature, do you think, has the same shape?
