ME122 Exercises for the 4th Long Exam

1. A centrifugal pump is constructed with radially oriented vanes. Draw the pump runner to scale and draw the
velocity triangles at runner entrance and exit if the speed is 1000 rpm and flow is 250 liters per second. The
runner tip diameter is 35 cm, the inside diameter is 30 cm and blade width is 2 cm. Determine the head
delivered to the water and power needed to drive the pump if the pump efficiency is 80%.

2. Water from a lower reservoir at 350 kPa is pumped at a rate of 0.5 m3/s over a hill through a 50 m long 0.25
m diameter pipe and pipe friction coefficient of 0.025. A pressure of 200 kPa is maintained at the destination
reservoir which is 30 m higher than the lower reservoir. Friction losses in the suction and discharge is each
0.5V2/2g.
a) What amount of power is to be supplied to the pump at 80% pump efficiency when the pump is
run at 800 rpm?
b) How would discharge, head and power change if the pump speed were increased to 1000 rpm?
c) Determine the head and flow rates supplied Pump Test
results at 800 rpm
if the pumps are run at 800 rpm and H (m) Q (m3/s)
i) one pump is used 0 1.50
ii) two pumps in series are used 180 0.80
iii) two pumps in parallel are used. 250 0

3. Estimate the pump differential pressure, shaft power and motor power requirement to pump 200,000 kg/hr
of water. The water stream is available from a storage tank which operates at atmospheric pressure and
250C. Minimum liquid level in the storage tank above pump suction nozzle is kept as 3m. Suction line is 6" in
(150 mm) size and 10 meters long. The discharge from pump is to be sent to another vessel with a top
connection for water inlet. The maximum height for the discharge line above the pump discharge nozzle is
12m. The discharge vessel operates at a pressure of 3 bars (1 bar = 100 kPa). There is no control valve in the
discharge line. Discharge line to be assumed 100m long considering all the fittings and valves. Assume pump
efficiency to be close to 70% and motor efficiency to be close to 90%.

4. Design a system to deliver 1 m3/s from reservoir A at elevation 300 m to reservoir B at 500 m. The distance
from A to B is 1000 km and the elevation between the two reservoirs is given by z (m) = 300 + 1.2x – 0.001x2,
where x is the distance from A in km. The system is to consist of a pipeline and a series of pumps.
Commercial steel pipe with a roughness e = 0.05 cm and a pressure rating of 150 m head is available. The
total cost of purchasing pipe and constructing a pipeline is listed below for various pipe sizes. Pumps that can
deliver 1 m3/s at 100 m head cost $10,000,000 each (installed). Determine the most economical design (i.e.
pipe size and number and location of pumps). Hint: Vary your pipe diameter and consider pumps in series.
Pipe diameter (m) Total Cost ($/km)
0.9 80,000
1.0 100,000
1.1 120,000
1.2 150,000
1.4 200,000

5. A centrifugal pump has a 100 mm diameter suction pipe and a 75 mm diameter delivery pipe. When
discharging 15 l/s of water, the inlet water mercury manometer with one limb exposed to the atmosphere
recorded a vacuum deflection of 198 mm; the mercury level on the suction side was 100 mm below the pipe
centerline. The delivery pressure gauge, 200 mm above the pump inlet, recorded a pressure of 0.95 bar. The
measured input power was 3.2 kW. Calculate the pump efficiency.
