PROBLEM SET # 2

ENGINEERING UTILITIES 2

1. A pump has a suction condition of 50 mmHg vacuum pressure, 100 mm diameter pipe and
discharge condition of 250 KPa, at 90 mm diameter. The discharge tank is 50 m elevation and the
suction is 5 m below the pump centerline. If the discharge is 0.20 m3/s, find the pump efficiency
for 260 kW brake power.

2. Find the power of motor needed to pump the water at a head of 100 m at the rate of 400 LPS if
pump efficiency is 70%.

3. A centrifugal pump delivers 1.8 m3/s of water against a head of 30m when rotating at 1200 RPM.
The diameter of its impeller is 45 cm. if a pump with the same specific speed is to discharge 6.0
m3/s at 1100 RPM, what is the impeller diameter in cm?

4. A pump delivers 4 m3/min of water from 100 KPa to 300 KPa. The inlet and outlet pipe diameters
are 15 cm and 12 cm respectively. Both pipes are on the same level. The inlet and outlet
temperatures are both 25C and mass density of water is 997 kg/m3. Calculate the pump work in
KW.
