C. Presentation of the Lesson

For today’s lesson we will
discuss about the Properties of
a Well Written Text. A well
written text is the key to
captivate the reader’s attention.
If a text is well written or the
ideas are clear, concise and is
engaging to the reader the
reader will continue reading it
until the last page, and as a
result the message of a text will
be clear and will successfully be
transmitted to the reader.

Now let us find out what are

these properties.

D. Discussion of the lesson

As a student you should be able
to distinguish a well written text
from not. If you would be able to
know it you can be a good
writer that can be able to
express meaning in writing.

And the properties that I am

talking about are organization,
cohesion and coherence,
language used and language
mechanics.
Let us start with organization.
Kindly read it _____.
(A student reads the presentation)

Thank you, _____.

Now based on the presentation,
what do you think organization
is? Who has an idea?
Yes _____.
- Arrangement of ideas.
Thank you _____.

When we say organization it

simply refers to the
arrangement of ideas in a text
and when your ideas are
organized it only means that
that you achieve this because
the ideas that you included on
the text are logically and
accurately arranged. When the
ideas on a text is organized it
will catch the reader’s attention
and it will be easy for them to
understand what the text is all
about.
Okay to say that a text is
organized there are elements
that we can look into.

And one of these elements is

the physical format.
Kindly read it _____.
(A student reads the presentation)
Thank you.
Who has an idea about physical
format?
Yes _____.
- It is the arrangement of words and
paragraphs in a text.
Very good

Physical format. It simply refers

to what you can see once you
are presented with a text. What
you can see right away, without
even reading the text, it
includes how your text is
divided, for example, are the
paragraphs is in the correct
order or are the paragraphs
divided in such a way that it is
easy to understand, or are the
ideas organized in such a way
that it is easy to understand.
The font you use, the borders,
the spacing, and the margins
you use are all examples of
organization. As a result, such
factors may influence how
people perceive the
organization of your text.

Is that clear class? - Yes ma’am.

Okay next, we have signal

words. Kindly read it _____. (A student reads the presentation)

Thank you.
Based on the meaning
presented, who can tell me or
who has an idea about signal
words? I know you have since
we discussed it last meeting.
Anyone?
Yes _____.
- These are words that we can use in
transition.
Very good!

Signal words are words that

help you transition from one
idea to another or signal words
could be words that serve as
cue for you to understand the
next idea. So it is the cue and
ordering of events, concepts, or
ideas in your text. Remember
the signal words that I
presented to you last meeting
particularly on narrative
paragraph? The signal words
like first, next, later, then, last,
finally etc., these are the words
that we can use in transition
from one idea to another.

Is that clear class?

- Yes ma’am.
Okay, let us move on to
structure.
Kindly read it _____. (A student reads the presentation)

Thank you.
Based on the meaning
presented, who has any idea
about structure?
Yes _____. - It is the framework of the text.

Very good!

Structure could be the complete

framework of the text. It can
simply refer to the previous
lesson which we discussed last
meeting, the text patterns. Is it
narrative, cause and effect,
descriptive etc. You can assess
that by reading the entire text
and if it really have these
complete framework, that
supports the purpose of writing
the text in the first place.

Am I clear class?
- Yes ma’am.
Okay let us have now the
coherence and cohesion.
Kindly read it _____. (A student reads the presentation)

Thank you.

Let us discuss first the

coherence. Coherence simply
refers to the relationship of
ideas between sentences or the
relationship of ideas. Ideas
must be related to one another
particularly between or among
sentences. It is the overall
sense of unity in the text that
includes the main point. You
have to make sure that the
ideas you presented match
each other and serve the same
purpose.
Is that clear class?
- Yes ma’am
Okay let’s move to cohesion. It
simple refers to the grammatical
and lexical relationship between
sentences. Now when we say
grammatical and lexical
relationship these are the
technicalities of presenting the
text, did you use the proper
grammar, did you use the
proper spelling, proper
punctuation marks?
- Yes ma’am.
Am I clear class?
Okay let’s take a look at this
example and try to figure out if
this text is coherence or
cohesion.

(presents the example)

When you look at the individual

sentences you can see that all
of these sentences are
grammatically correct, they also
have proper punctuations,
therefore the sentences are
cohesive, the text is cohesive.
But the ideas of each sentences
doesn’t support one another
have a complete idea. So this
text is cohesive but not
coherent.

Did you get it class?

- Yes ma’am.

Okay the next property is

Language Use. Kindly read it
_____. (A student reads the presentation)

Thank you.
Based on the meaning
presented, who has an idea
about language use?
Yes _____.

Very good!

Language use simple refers to

how appropriate is the word or
vocabulary that we are using in
relation to the text itself. Did we
use the correct term, did we use
the correct vocabulary to
represent the ideas that we
want to. So meaning when we
are writing text, the words that
we use need to support the
purpose that we have in mind,
because our main goal in
writing a text is to make other
people understand what we
want them to understand. So
we have to ensure that the
words that we are using could
be easily understood by our
readers.

In terms of language, it could be

formal or informal.
Kindly read the presentation
(A student reads the presentation)
_____.
Thank you.

Informal language meaning

using words that are direct and
simple and usually informal
language is use when it comes
to writing for your own or even
writing to your family, friends
and colleagues, so basically
this type of language is used
when we want to talk or we
want to relay ideas or
information to people who we
can share an intimate
relationship with or a close
relationship with, whether it is a
family, friends or colleagues.

Formal language is for

academic texts we utilize the
formal type of language in
writing academic texts. Formal
type of language is an unbiased
language because it really
follows or it strictly adheres to
the rules of language used.
That is why formal language is
what we use in writing
academic text business text and
even government and official
text.

Let’s see the differences among

the ways we use language.
(Presents an example)

Okay the last property is

Language mechanics. Kindly
read the presentation _____. (A student reads the presentation)

Thank you.

Language mechanics are

simply the correct and proper
use of the technicalities of the
language, for example,
elements such as spelling,
punctuation marks and
capitalization. These are just
three of the basic things that we
have to consider when we are
writing a text.

Let us discuss first spelling.

Kindly read it _____.
(A student reads the presentation)
Thank you.

In terms of spelling, you should

make sure that you consistently
use one standard for spelling
your words. So, what do I mean
when I say "consistently use
one standard"? Now, in terms of
spelling, consider the use of the
English language. There are
various types of English
language, such as British
English or language, American
English, or even us here in the
Philippines, who have our own
take on how English should be
used, so in terms of spelling,
you must be consistent with
that. In British English, they add
the letter U for example the
word color in British English it is
spelled as c o l o u r but in
American English it is simply
spelled as c o l o r. now if you
use one type of English already,
then just settle for that one, be
consistent with that particular
standard.

Let us now move on to

punctuation. Kindly read the
presentation _____. (A student reads the presentation)

Thank you.
Who has an idea about
punctuation?
Yes _____. - These are the symbols like dot,
comma, exclamation point and
question mark.
Very good!

When we say punctuation, this

is simply the use of different
symbols to represent the ideas
that we have in the sentence or
how we present the particular
sentences that we are going to
write. In terms of writing a well
written text punctuation marks
are very important because we
use them based on the impact
and thought you want to
emphasize in your text,
sometimes the improper use of
punctuations may lead to
misinformation or it may also
lead to misunderstanding.

Take a look at these examples.

(present examples)

Now let us move on to

capitalization.
Kindly read the presentation
_____. (A student reads the presentation)

Thank you.
Do you have any idea about
capitalization? Anyone?
Yes _____. - The use of capital letters.

Very good!

Capitalization simply refers to

the use of lowercase and
uppercase letters, so there are
certain rules that we need to
follow in terms of using
capitalization. Always consider
the conventions in capitalizing
grids such as proper nouns and
titles, so proper nouns and titles
always begin with capital letters
or uppercase letters.

So these are the three basic

things that we have to look into
in terms of language
mechanics. In writing you
should be careful with spelling,
punctuation and capitalization.

Did you understand class? - Yes ma’am.

E. Generalization
Okay, who can tell me the
properties of a well written text? - Organization, Coherence and
Cohesion, Language used, and
Language Mechanics.
Very good!

Now, what is or what are the

importance of knowing these
properties? - these properties will help us to
differentiate a well written text from
not and it will help us to be able to
write a well written text.
Very good!
I am glad that you are able to
understand our lesson for
today.
