Matter may be classified as pure

substances and mixtures

Pure Substance
The substances that contain only one type of particle
and are free from any mixture, are known as pure
substances. Gold, silver, iron, and aluminum are pure
substances.

Mixture
A substance made by mixing other substances
together.
Elements
- Is the simplest type of substance.
- It consists of only one kind of atom.
- Pure substance in which all atoms have the same
number of protons
- Each element has physical and chemical properties.
Classification of Metals

Metals: Most metals have a shiny metallic luster

and reflective surface.
Nonmetals: Nonmetals are generally dull or non-
reflective and do not have a metallic luster.
Metalloids: Metalloids can have a metallic or
nonmetallic appearance, depending on the
element.
Compounds
- Atoms of different elements are combined
- chemical substances made up of two or more elements that are
chemically bound together in a fixed ratio.
- Can only be separated by chemical means, not physically.
Kinds of Compounds

Acids
- Compounds that produce
hydrogen ions when
dissolved in water.

Bases
- Compounds that produce
hydroxide ions when
dissolved in water.
