W12 Writing Practice: Transitions

Name: Isabele Cristine Farias Franco

Instructions
Review the W12 Writing Lesson: Transitions. Then answer each of the following questions.

1. What prompt question are you going to answer in your persuasive essay
due in Week 13? Check ONE.

☐ Based on what you learned about the definition of a primary emotion, do you
believe anger is a choice, or should it be considered a primary emotion? Why or why
not?
☐ Does everyone come to earth with the same amount of potential? Why or why
not?
☐ Do you believe that people have a specific “calling” in life? Why or why not?
☒ What counts more-- hard work or talent? Why?

2. What is your thesis statement? (should only be one sentence)

Example: My spiritual and secular study as well as my own life experience has taught me
that life callings can change as spiritual gifts and needs in the world change.

I am certain that hard work counts more because talent can make things easier but it's
hard work that makes things happen, it's pointless to have a talent if you don't put it to
use.

3. What is your topic sentence for the first body paragraph? (should only be one
sentence and should contain a transitional phrase)

Example: Above all, my scripture study as well as the words of latter-day prophets have
taught me that life callings can change based on spiritual gifts and current needs in the
world.

Possessing a talent is a good place to start, but having it isn't enough; you also need to do
something more.
4. What is your topic sentence for the second body paragraph? (should only be
one sentence and should contain a transitional phrase)

Example: In addition to my spiritual study, my secular study of the life calling also supports
this notion that callings are born at the intersection of spiritual gifts and need in the world.

A hard worker is someone who goes above and beyond in their efforts, completes
assignments diligently and see the results of success.

5. What is your topic sentence for the counterargument paragraph? (should

only be one sentence and should contain a counterargument “cue phrase” transition)

Example: Many people, at one time or another, have felt that their failure to act on certain
opportunities has somehow caused them to miss out on what should have been their calling
in life.

A counterargument to my own argument is that naturally gifted people are fortunate in a

way that they don’t need to put in as much effort to succeed and are capable to achieve
life's objectives efficiently and faster than others.
