INTRODUCTION TO THE SECTOR, CHALLENGES
AND OTHER EXISTING NGOS

In India, the education system is rapidly expanding, thanks to significant private parties
cooperating with the government to improve it. A variety of steps are also being considered by
the government to boost India's educational quality. Primary education is becoming more
popular, and many international schools are establishing themselves in India. Parents are now
voluntarily enrolling their children in international schools to receive a high-quality education
beginning in primary school.

Education is a crucial component in a country's development:

1) Develop scientific and rational thinking
2) Facilitate adaptation to change
3) Develops science and technology

But education is still a challenging proposition in India due to a variety of factors such as lack of
infrastructure, quality of education delivered. Other factors such as poor reach to rural areas, less
government expenditure on education, also focus on boy education more than girl education
promoting gender disparity.

All of these reasons have harmed India's educational system. The Indian government has also
begun charging a 2% 'education cess' on all union taxes with the goal of boosting education. The
money raised from the education cess is used to improve the country's primary education. The
Indian government has also launched a slew of new loan programmes for students seeking higher
education.

Apart from that, one of the areas that is highlighted is the plight of disadvantaged children and
women.
● In India, 95 children out of 1000 do not make it to their fifth birthday while 7% do not
survive to see their first birthday.
● Only 38% of India's children under the age of two have received vaccinations.
● With 400 million children, India has the world's largest kid population, with 40% of the
population under the age of 18.
● Only about a third of first-graders make it to the eighth grade.
● One out of every ten children in India is handicapped.

4
Women currently account for 34% of the 44.7 lakh workforce in the IT and ITeS sector,
according to Nasscom, the IT industry lobby. India's IT industry will contribute 8% of the
country's GDP by 2020. Sustained expansion in the IT industry is expected to contribute to a
brighter future for employable women in the industry.

Improvements in education and job opportunities have been strongly encouraged in India in
order to guarantee that all employees, regardless of gender, have access to the labour force. In
India's workplaces, however, women remain underrepresented. Women's empowerment is
critical not only for their individual development but also for the creation of the nation's
economy.

Other existing NGOs that primarily work towards the upliftment of underprivileged children:

● CRY - Child Rights and You

● Smile Foundation
● Khushii
● Little Seeds
● Akanksha Foundation
● Save the Children

Some of the common challenges faced by such NGOs are as follows:

● Getting the right support - NGOs often have a hard time marketing themselves. It can be
challenging for them to come up with the right communication for the sake of donations
and campaigning, i.e., spreading the word about their cause(s) and striking a chord with
the masses. Also, it is critical for NGOs to maintain positive relationships with
government agencies at all levels – local, state, and federal. NGOs must be willing to
collaborate with them as and when required.

● Lack of skilled people - There is a deficiency of qualified and experienced development

sector professionals in the country. The projects devised by NGOs can be quite complex
which need them to go amidst the most backward and marginalized communities, engage
and collaborate with them to craft solutions to their struggles. To carry this out, NGOs
need people with a sound understanding of the socio-economic scenario of India.
However, there are only a few institutes of repute which impart training programs in
development studies. As a result, NGOs face a major shortfall in the suitable human
capital at their disposal.

INFORMATION ABOUT THE NGO
ABOUT AAROHAN

Aarohan is a non-government organization founded in 2005 by Ms. Rani Patel. It is registered

under the Society Registration Act, 1860 of India and is a NITI CSO’s Standing Committee
member. Headquartered in Malviya Nagar, New Delhi, Aarohan works for children, women and
the transgender belonging to the underpriveledged groups of our society. The main focus of
Aarohan is to provide quality primary education to children belonging to economically weaker
and disadvantaged sections of the society with the firm belief that education is the only tool to
help young minds to make wise decisions and improve their standard of living. The NGO not
only provides comprehensive assistance to children and physically and psychologically empower
them but also take great initiatives to develop skills and reduce poverty among the women,
transgender and other deprived members of the community. Further, issues and challenges with
respect to the needs of tribal, rural, backward and reserved sections of the society are also
promoted and advocated by Aarohan.

HISTORY OF AAROHAN

The idea to start Aarohan came to Ms Rani Patel when she was deeply moved by an incident of a
7 year old boy named ROHAN stealing the wing mirror of her car in 2004. She wanted to
understand the reason behind the incident and ultimately found out how children who grow up in
streets and slum areas usually end up picking waste, stealing and becoming drug and sexual
abuse victims. She along with her friend Anjana Tata discovered further issues and challenges
faced by children belonging to underprivileged sections of society and the impact of the same by
visiting and engaging with people living on the streets and local slum areas. Due to lack of
education both among the parents as well as the children was identified as one of the
fundamental reasons behind their lack of proper health, living and financial conditions. The two
friends who were deeply affected by the societal sins then decided to tackle the situation by
establishing Aarohan to provide the required support, education and assistance to the
underprivileged children.

The Vision and Mission of Aarohan are:

Vision – “For every underprivileged child to have the opportunity to exercise her/his right to
education, health and nutrition and for every adult to access a livelihood with dignity.”

Mission – “To provide comprehensive and holistic support through education, health care, skill
training and required programs for the upliftment of underprivileged members of society
especially children.”

6
To encourage children to improve their living conditions, become financially independent and
take charge of their life, Aarohan offers quality education and training programs on life skills
and extracurricular activities to the young minds. The main focus is to make children aware of
their rights and provide them the opportunity to develop skills that will enable them to improve
their standard of living. At the same time Aarohan also takes initiatives towards the health of the
children they serve to ensure proper physical and mental development of the young members of
our community. In addition to providing education to children, the NGO also has a great
experience in working with the LGBTQ community by organizing training programs for skill
development and campaigns and programs to spread awareness on AIDS. The children and other
members of the tribal communities (who are forced to come in touch with mainstream
civilization due to the challenges posed by depleting forests) in Jharkhand, Odisha and
Telangana have also benefited from the educational and skill development programs organized
by Aarohan.

Aarohan has continually transformed the lives of the needy people especially children by
providing continuous and comprehensive support and assistance to little ones from birth till the
time they become independent. The NGO has incorporated and engaged with many stakeholders
throughout the years of its functioning and has successfully developed one-of-a-kind approaches
to provide quality education to children. Aarohan has pledged to support and implement the
United Nations Sustainable Development Goals by taking continuous initiatives towards
ensuring equality, better health, quality education, environmental protections and better
socio-economic standards.

OWNERSHIP AND MAIN OPERATORS

aware of the challenges faced by young children living in slums and streets due to lack of proper
education, guidance and support, they decided to formally register Aarohan in 2005. Over the
years they have not only transformed the lives of children but have also taken initiatives to
empower women, provide the required support to the third gender and assistance to the tribal
communities. The NGO currently has a board handling the operations and a team of committed

BENEFICIARIES

The beneficiaries of NGO Aarohan are as follows:

● Children- The main beneficiary of Aarohan are the children belonging to the
underprivileged section of the society. Aarohan has brought in around 2000
underprivileged children in the education network since its inception. The NGO ensures
that quality education through innovative approaches to teaching and learning helps the
underprivileged children to take better control of their lives and become independent
individuals with a bright future. Majority of the initiatives at Aarohan are for children to
ensure their physical and mental development.
● Women- Aarohan has clearly identified the societal evils women are a victim of in this
male dominant society. Tto allow women to learn about their rights, gain job
opportunities, teach their children, become financially independent and self confident,
Aarohan has taken various initiatives to empower them and equip them with the relevant
skills. Women, therefore, are also one of the important beneficiaries of Aarohan NGO.
● Transgender- The NGO also serves the members of the LGBTQ Community. This
section of the society lacks the relevant sources and awareness and are excluded from the
mainstream community. To allow the 3rd Gender to live a dignified life, Aarohan has
launched a project to provide them the opportunity to learn skills and become aware
about their rights to help them become more self confident and financially independent.
● Tribal Communities- The tribal communities are also one of the beneficiaries of the
NGO. Various initiatives like educating the tribal children, preserving and promoting
tribal art, spreading awareness on hygiene, skill training etc. has been undertaken by

8
Aarohan to help these tribal communities overcome the challenges posed by climate
change, environmental degradation and development of cities which has greatly impacted
them on social, economic and cultural front.

SCOPE OF WORK

● PROJECTS
○ Early Child Care Program- Aarohan is of the firm belief that early mental and
physical development of a childhood is one of the most fundamental ways to
develop the community or the society. Since its inception the NGO has been
actively working towards providing quality education to the children and also
developed the Early Childcare Centre at Jagdamba Camp Slums in New Delhi in
2006. Through the center, Aarohan is able to engage with the slum dwellers to get
a better understanding of the challenges and issues faced by children and how it
impacts early childhood development. The Centre then systematically intervenes
by creating awareness, helping the parents to realize the importance of health,
safte, education, teaching students through innovative methods, monitoring the
health of young ones and providing the required support and encouragement to
explore and develop.
○ Project After School Hours- The After School Hours focuses on providing
academic support and assistance to students to enable them keep up with their
schoolwork, prevent any kind of academic stress and pass their exams with flying
colors. Under After School Hours project various other projects are also
undertaken like:
■ Project Asha- Providing academic assistance to non school students to
clear entrance exams and get admission in schools.
■ Project Pass- Free after school academic help provided to primary level
students along with learning material, luches, stationery etc.
■ Project Pathways- After school academic help provided to secondary
level students from class 6th to 8th with special emphasis on math and
science to enable them to keep up with increased academic pressure.
■ Project Hope- After school academic help provided to secondary level
students from class 9th and 10th with additional focus on science
practicals to help them score good marks which serves as an important
prerequisite for choosing their desired stream.
■ Project Shikhar- After school academic help provided to senior secondary
level students from class 11th and 12th to make them better prepared for
pursuing higher education.
○ Women Empowerment- Under women empowerment, Aarohan launched the
“Teach the Mother” project in 2012 based on the belief that women, especially a

9
mother, plays a very influential role in the development of the society. It focuses
on holistic development of women to empower them to become financially
independent and gain the self confidence to navigate through challenging
circumstances. To gain employment opportunities, women are provided training
in tailoring, embroidery, fashion, literacy etc. at the Skill Development Centre,
New Delhi. Certified courses (in line with the curriculum of the USHA Silai
School) as well as sessions on menstrual hygiene, financial literacy, retail
management and entrepreneurship are organized as a part of the project.
○ Tribal Community Projects- Aarohan in association with 10 other NGOs has
taken steps to uplift the vulnerable and marginalized tribal communities in
Odisha, Andhra Pradesh and Jharkhand under the Tribal Community Project. In
order to preserve the tribal culture, heritage and art, various and prevent any kind
of economic, social and civil exclusions, initiatives like providing quality
education, spreading awareness on health and hygiene, imparting skill training,
empowering women etc. have been undertaken. Through these initiatives Aarohan
ensures that these tribal communities sustain and thrive in their natural
environment.
○ Aarohan 3rd Gender- Aarohan strongly believes in equality and an individual's
right to lead a dignified life. Through numerous collaborations with a variety of
individuals, institutions, organizations and government, Aarohan has taken
various initiatives like regular health examination, organizing sessions on
financial literacy, skill training, spreading awareness etc with the aim of providing
a common platform to the LGBTQ community for building career and gaining
confidence. Since 2012 the NGO has also been involved in organizing programs
in association with Delhi States AIDS control Society (DSACS).
○ The Centre for Excellence- The Centre for Excellence is an educational project
initiated by Aarohan specially for girl children of the Sakipur Village, Uttar
Pradesh. Through this project the NGO is successfully able to provide quality
education and is able to develop the relevant skills which will help them to be
more financially independent and gain confidence to fight the challenges
presented by the male dominant society. Through this project Aarohan ensures
that the people of the village especially the mother of the girls are aware about the
remedies available against the societal evils like dowry, domestic abuse, child
marriage etc.
○ Community Library- The community Library project is an initiative taken by
Aarohan to create public libraries for children who otherwise do not have access
to any kind of reading material. They ensure that different varieties of books are
made available to students who are willing to read and write. Further, additional
extracurricular activities like storytelling, dance, art and craft etc. are also
organized to allow the children to learn better. Through this project, Aarohan also

10
wishes to achieve community engagement, participation and awareness as it
allows the corporates, institutions and individuals to donate and indulge in
activities carried out as a part of the project like storytelling, film screenings etc.

● CAMPAIGN

○ Covid Response- As a response to Covid-19, Aarohan launched the

#NoRonaForCorona campaign under which they took up the responsibility of
distributing basic necessities, cooked food, hygiene products, medicine, masks,
sanitizer etc. to the underprivileged people living in slums and streets in different
parts of New Delhi. On the introduction of vaccination, they organized numerous
free of cost vaccination camps and are still doing so.
○ Digital Transformation- When the entire world was forced to work online due to
the coronavirus pandemic, Aarohan also took initiatives to seamlessly transfer the
offline teaching to online teaching. It developed innovative approaches to teach
and learn through the online platforms, provided relevant training to teachers,
established a Computer Library for easy access etc. to ensure learning through
accessible and inclusive education.
○ Vaccination for Transgender and Marginalized- Aarohan organized campaigns
to get the marginalized and the 3rd Gender vaccinated against the coronavirus as
these groups of the community donot have the necessary awareness and resources
and are usually excluded form the common public policies and platforms. In
addition to vaccination, the underprivileged people were also provided with
support in terms of counseling to help them cope up with the stress of the
pandemic.

11
IMPACT OF COVID 19 ON SECTOR, NGO AND
BENEFICIARIES
COVID-19 has impacted in multiple ways :
1. Financial stress
Only around 70% of relief NGOs have received additional financing specifically for COVID-19;
the rest are using existing programming funding to fund relief efforts.
Given that traditional sources of funding, such as philanthropy and corporate social
responsibility (CSR), are now moving towards COVID-19 relief and healthcare-related activity,
NGOs are concerned about their programmes' and organizations' long-term viability.

2. Unpreparedness to switch to digital platforms

Most businesses admitted that they had been putting off implementing digital technology in their
operations, and that the unexpected lockdown caught them completely off guard. Many teams are
finding it difficult to work remotely due to a lack of digital capabilities. Nonprofits that have
already implemented digital technology into their operations and programmes are finding it
easier to deal with the situation.

3. Loss of progress on existing programmes

Many organizations were forced to temporarily halt their on-the-ground programmes in order to
focus on relief operations, and there is concern that this disruption will destroy years of work and
progress, which has already been hampered by the financial shortfall. Short-term programme
suspensions can have long-term consequences, especially among marginalized and vulnerable
communities.

Aarohan working in the education sector was affected badly by Covid as all education sectors
came to a halt. The purpose of the NGO was defeated as it could not continue imparting
education.
NGO’s took a lot of time to adapt to online mode and how to improve their effectiveness in
online mode.
Aarohan could not provide education to the children of age group due to infrastructure issues.

12
CHALLENGES FACED BY THE NGO AND LOW
COST/NO COST SUGGESTIONS TO OVERCOME
THEM
Following are the challenges faced by the organization in dealing with children from
marginalized communities, alongwith unique and innovative workarounds to address them:

● First-generation learners - Because the majority of the kids come from low-income
families, it is difficult to pique their interest in academics. Aarohan puts in efforts to
make lessons more interactive, and hence more enjoyable. To create a pleasant and lively
environment, their classroom walls are decorated with creative stuff. Aarohan believes
that each child is unique and responds in accordance with their circumstances.
Needless to say, social media is a powerful tool that can be leveraged to spread awareness
about the issues that Aarohan works for and to promote their initiatives and programs.
They already have an active presence on platforms like Facebook, Instagram, Twitter and
Linkedin, the reach of which can be further enhanced with steps mentioned below in
Projects (I).

● Parent’s nonchalant attitude towards studies - To deal with it, Aarohan assumes the role
of a parent and provides the youngster with holistic support. Counseling meetings with
parents and students are conducted to address this issue in groups as well as individually.
For parent-teacher conferences, the schedule is flexible as teachers are available round
the clock to update the parents on their children’s progress and resolve any concerns.
Every teacher has WhatsApp groups with students and their parents for ease of
communication.

● Unstable jobs - The majority of the parents are migrant workers who return home when
they are out of work. To address this issue, Aarohan provides them with vocational
training to improve their employability and to enlighten them about various relevant
government initiatives. They also work with other NGOs to equip parents with job
opportunities.

● Challenge of Access - Attracting needy children to the organization is a challenge in

itself, and distance and transportation issues further worsen the problem. Hence for the
ease of conveyance, bicycles are provided to the children who come from faraway places,
especially girls. In the unprecedented situation arising out of COVID-19 and the resulting
lockdown, Aarohan had to step up to keep up with this sudden change. They distributed
tablets and smartphones at the center to ensure that children have access to online classes.

PROJECTS

I. SOCIAL MEDIA IDEAS FOR THE NGO

-ALL MEMBERS

This project involved suggesting ideas to the NGO to increase their engagement with different
stakeholders on various social media platforms. We were asked to answer the following
questions:
How can we drive:
● More traffic to NGOs' websites
● More likes for their posts &
● More followers for their pages

For this purpose we explored different websites and gathered information regarding the best
practices used by organizations to increase engagement with different stakeholders on different
social media platforms and suggested the same to the NGO.

The objective of this project was

● To suggest ways to reach out to more number of people who share the same values and
beliefs as that of Aarohan
● To increase the awareness about the cause which Aarohan works for
● To ensure understanding of different initiatives taken by NGO for the betterment of
underprivileged children, women, transgender and tribal communities among the
stakeholders
● To gain more supporters and volunteers for a noble cause
● To reach out to beneficiaries who might benefit from the NGO

Some of the ideas suggested by us are:

● More traffic to our website:
○ Including the link of the website on all social media pages as well as any kind of
material (letterhead, business card, newsletter etc.) that is printed and distributed
to external stakeholders.
○ Cross Promotion- Getting the organization NGO works/associate with to provide
the link of NGOs website on their social media pages and/or website.
○ Blogs and newsletter to draw the attention of those concerned with the cause and
to engage with those who are already aware about the NGO.
● More likes for our posts:
○ Engaging with the followers through contest/quizzes/activities posts.
○ Sharing stories on social media platforms.

14
○ Include more videos and reels as they get more engagement than photos.
● More followers for our pages:
● Include the link of social media pages on the NGOs website.
● Creating a business account:
○ Help creating instagram ads
○ Enables donate button (Donate stickers in stories)
○ Can add location, email, phone number
● Include posts which include data and facts.

II. TRAINING MODULE FOR TEACHERS

-ALL MEMBERS

This project involved creating training modules that will be used by government school teachers
and the NGO to impart training and equip teachers with necessary skills to enhance learning for
the students. With coronavirus pandemic, the way teaching and learning takes place has changed
tremendously. Therefore, teachers need to be continuously trained to ensure they are able to meet
the changing needs of students. The training module included the following topics:
● Teaching methodology
● Diversity and inclusion
● Student health and well being

We as a team mutually decided on these topics as they felt most relevant as per the changing
context. There is an urgent need to bring in different and innovative teaching methods to ensure
students are engaged and learning takes place. Everyone has been greatly impacted by the
pandemic including students. In addition to the pressure of studies they now have to deal with
the challenges posed by online platforms. Therefore, student health and well being is one of the
important aspects every school and teacher should focus on. And lastly acceptance needs to be
created on the part of teachers who engage with students who are all different from each other in
terms of needs, background, race, culture etc.

The objective of developing such a training module was to ensure that schools have the relevant
data and information available with them to facilitate effective transfer of training to their
teachers. Such training modules act as a great support material and provide a foundation for
carrying out the training programs successfully. The data for creating the training module was
mostly gathered on the basis of secondary research.

We recommend the use of government-initiated Diksha app to promote digital learning all across
the nation. The platform offers engaging learning content, in tandem with the prescribed school
syllabus, to teachers, students and parents.

15
The designed module had the below-mentioned objectives:

● Identify prevalent biased attitudes and behavior among teachers and students.
● Develop sensitive and inclusive pedagogical processes in transaction of various
disciplines.
● Adopt creative learning activities that foster a sensitive and equitable classroom
environment.

to overcome the challenges.

ABOUT THE PROJECT FOR WHICH PROPOSAL WAS DRAFTED:

Project brief-
The purpose of the project is to adopt a primary school with the objective of taking the education
quality to the next level while incorporating the latest technology and trends in teaching methods
such as gamification and fun learning which will help the students to retain the learnings and use
them in real life. Education is a very important part in the life of every individual as proper
education can help give wings to the growth of the children both in their personal and
professional lives. Specifically this project is focused to improve the accessibility of education
while enhancing the effectiveness of teaching by training the teachers in newer methods of
practical, fun and interactive teaching while putting focus on using IT to teach children while
also taking care of their health and safety, both physically and mentally.

Project Objective-

IV.3. MONTHLY NEWSLETTER JANUARY 2022

This project involved drafting the monthly newsletter for Aarohan for the month of January
2022. The NGO gave us a rough draft document containing the details regarding all the
initiatives, events and activities that it worked on and provided us with the relevant material to
create the newsletter. Each of the activities that took place during the month were then clearly
explained by us in the newsletter along with the pictures. Some of the events that took place
were:
● Republic day celebrations
● Vaccination camps
● Self-defense sessions for girls from 5th to 10th class
● Internship orientation session for B-school students
● Girl child day celebration
● Distribution of blankets
● Birthday celebrations
● Parent teacher conferences

Through this project we realized how important it is for organizations to publish regular
newsletters as it is one of the most effective ways of engaging with different stakeholders.
Newsletters is a very important tool especially for Non-Government Organizations as it helps in
bringing in the attention of a lot of important stakeholders and even individuals who share the
same values and ideology as that of the NGO. It also acts as a strong tool to educate and spread
awareness about the cause for which the NGO works and bring in together like minded people to
help the society overcome the challenges.

The snapshot of the newsletter has been provided in Annexure-IV.

The social media templates created by us have been provided in Annexure-VI.

VI. PROPOSAL DEVELOPMENT

- SHIFALI & SAKSHI

The purpose of this project is to provide vocational training to women who have faced
tremendous obstacles. The worldwide pandemic, which has affected every aspect of human
existence and development, has had negative consequences for young girls and women, adding
further hurdles to the already existing societal ills and prejudice they confront on a daily basis.
The project will primarily focus on giving vocational training to young women in order to help
them find work. We hope to encourage and support these women as they work to establish a
better life and future for themselves, acquire confidence and self-esteem, and take steps toward
financial empowerment via the training they will receive.

To assist women in overcoming challenges, it is now necessary to recognise and meet their
needs. We must guarantee that all policies and efforts stress and prioritize the protection and
safety of all girls and women from gender-based violence and other pervasive ills. As members
of society, it is our duty to help and encourage young girls and women to overcome these
obstacles by providing them with opportunities to earn, study, develop, and grow.

Activities:
● To promote employment oriented vocation skills and training to the adolescent girls and
women from the community
● To provide awareness on social issues and their rights
● To encourage self employment by providing related training and exposure visits
● To certify and to liaison with the trained institutes in order to strengthen training and
placements opportunities for the trained girls and women
● To provide skill development to improve self confidence and employability among the
rural adolescent girls and widows.

To implement this training program for women empowerment, we would need to bring in experts
to conduct the different sessions, and have a proper schedule in place, which encourages women
and girls to come up and participate in the same. The ultimate objective would also be to
generate more awareness among these families so that they recognise the need for upliftment of
women in the society.

VII. ONE-LINERS ON PEACE
-ALL MEMBERS

In light of the Russia-Ukraine situation, we were asked to write one-liners for social media posts
as well as a Women’s Day event to promote an understanding of the current global affairs as well
as a desire for world harmony and peace among the children. Following are some of them:

● In this time of global political unrest, let us yearn for a peaceful and harmonious world
for our children to live in.
● War is the choice of humans, not a necessity
● When it gets down to fighting a war, you're playing a part of system
● You may say i am a dreamer, but I am not the only one
● "There is no way to peace. Peace is the way" - A.J. Muste
● The war for peace is the only war worth fighting.
● The need to favor peace should be more than the need to oppose war.
● We need to sow the seeds of peace to reap the harvest of peace.
● Peace is a necessity now and not a luxury anymore.
● If we want our children to see the light of day in the future, we must all strive towards
restoring peace on our Mother Earth.
● "There was never a good war, or a bad peace" - Benjamin Franklin
● Peace spreads peace. War only spreads hatred.
● Peace guarantees growth while war guarantees destruction.
● "The more you sweat in peace, the less you bleed in war." -Norman Schwarzkopf
● War is the consequence of challenges arising from absence of peace.
● War destroys the love, understanding and forgiveness that peace creates.

The purpose of the one liners was to convey a strong message through social media using as few
words as possible. This would apprise the people regarding prominent social issues and can be
used to get the conversation started.

VIII. COFFEE TABLE BROCHURE FOR NURSERY

-ALL MEMBERS

We took a field trip to Aarohan where we interacted with Ms. Rani Patel (President) and Mr.
Abdul Azeem. We visited their nursery and were asked to prepare a small coffee table book for
the same. This nursery caters to the development of the children from marginalized sections of
the society, most of the children come from people where the parents are working as daily wage
workers or similar odd jobs and have come from different states looking for employment. With

21
the help of this nursery the NGO is working towards making the society a better place with the
development of these marginalized children and helping them in making a better future for
themselves and their families through the power of education and overall development..

The objective of this coffee table book is to display it on a table with brief information about the
nursery and inspire discussions on it hence also broadening the reach of the NGO. We gathered
primary information about the nursery and also talked with various volunteers working there, did
some secondary research on how a coffee table book is supposed to be, clicked pictures and
made a designer booklet out of it that presents an overview of the nursery.

The draft of the coffee table book of the Aarohan nursery has been attached in Annexure VII.

LEARNINGS

Working with Aarohan, we were able to achieve a holistic understanding of the social sector and
its functioning. We got an overview of the functioning as well as the limitations of the sector.
Firstly, we got an overview of the difficult circumstances of the marginalised groups that are
poor women, children and people from the trans community. We were able to map the
sustainable goals set by the United nations and how they align with the organisation.
After this, we got an overview of the social media platform and how it can be used in the social
sector.
Developing proposals we were able to combine the managerial skills with the social sector and
eventually customise it as per the organisations requirements.

PROBLEM STATEMENT
Covid-19 pandemic is one of the biggest disruptions which the globe is currently facing. The global
pandemic presents extraordinary challenges to healthcare systems, economy, business, education system
etc. and has unfortunately resulted in a significant loss of human life. It has impacted global and national
economies; the way business is conducted and even how people live their life all across the world. The
Covid-19 outbreak has had a far-reaching effect on essentially every area of development. In practically
every nation on the planet, COVID-19 has had a terrible effect on people's health and livelihoods. For the
first time since 1998, extreme poverty is on the rise. The epidemic has disproportionately afflicted the
poor and vulnerable over the past year, and it threatens to force millions more into unfavorable
circumstances.

Though the pandemic has affected every section, group and segment of the society, it has a major impact
on the individuals belonging to the most vulnerable and/or marginalized social groups. It continues to
afflict populations such as those living in poverty, the elderly, people with disabilities or chronic diseases
or immunocompromised people and youth. It is especially wreaking havoc in the lives of children, girls
and young women all across the world especially in India and has become the largest economic, social
and health problems of their lifetime.

As a result of COVID-19, the young girls and women, especially those belonging to marginalized
communities are exposed to a variety of risks like child marriages, domestic violence, sexual harassment,
etc and become a victim of child labor and gender-based discrimination and violence. Their challenges are
not only limited to such evils that exists in our society but also include problems which deprive them of
their basic right of education, good health and sanitation. The vulnerability of girls has grown in leaps and
bounds, with a big number of girls abandoning their education and marrying at a young age since the
majority of the family's breadwinners have lost their employment or other sources of income due to
lockdowns imposed by the government to prevent the spread of virus. The COVID-19 scenario has
therefore brought about a host of negative consequences on adolescent girls' education, personal safety,
physical autonomy, health, peer support, social relationships, and economic possibilities. With lack of
opportunities, education, proper food and even sanitation, young girls and women continue to face the
unprecedented challenges brought by the global covid-19 pandemic.

26
It has now become essential to acknowledge and ensure that the needs of young girls and women are met
to help them overcome the challenges presented by the pandemic. We must ensure that all policies and
initiatives must emphasize and prioritize the protection and safety of all children, as well as girls and
women, from gender-based violence and other evils that continue to threaten them. As a member of the
society, it is our responsibility to take initiative to support and encourage the young girls and women to
overcome such challenges by providing them opportunity to earn, learn, develop and grow not only for
their own development but for the holistic development of the society.

PROJECT OBJECTIVES
We plan to introduce this project “Skill training in Tailoring and Garment making” to assist, encourage
and support young girls and women to learn tailoring and garment making skills with the aim of making
them self-sufficient and financially empowered. The objectives of this project are:

skills to enable them pursue better opportunities and employment.

● Educating and promoting awareness to help young girls to take care of their personal
hygiene and health with the help of Menstrual Hygiene sessions that will be provided

● Enhancing the quality of life and socio-economic status of young girls and women.

PROJECT DESIGN

grooming classes to prepare the ladies to move out into the world confident and self-sufficient. The ladies
will be provided vocational training for Tailoring and Garment Making and will be educated on the
dangers of textile landfills and urged to recycle their textile waste. Short courses on financial literacy,
entrepreneurial skills, retail management as well as menstrual hygiene will also be given to improve
career opportunities and standard of living.

A group of 80 young ladies above the age of 15 will be recruited and accepted into this program to
participate in the training program.

The training program will last six months for a batch of 40 recipients, with two groups training for a year.
The beneficiaries will get training under the supervision of a highly competent instructor with training
expertise, who will be accessible for the duration of the training program. For further coordination and
smooth functioning, the beneficiaries will be divided into two batches of 20 women each.
The beneficiaries will be provided knowledge and skills on the basics and practical aspects of tailoring
and garment manufacturing and also will be provided with the resources and opportunities to provide
these products to the marketplace and become financially independent.

In the production phase of the program, the project supervisor and instructors will get orders for clothes
and take finished garments.

When Trainees complete their training, the organization will help beneficiaries to put up tailor units in
their respective areas.

In addition to the training, as a part of the project a variety of educational sessions will be conducted to
educate and empower women in order to improve their quality of life. This includes:

27
● FINANCIAL LITERACY SESSIONS: Financial Literacy sessions will be organized to
help beneficiaries understand financial terms and tools for managing their financial resources.
These sessions will enable them to better manage their finances and thus become more
financially empowered.

PROBLEM STATEMENT
The year of 2020 brought about one of the biggest disruptions of the modern world to not only healthcare
but in every aspect of life of every single individual all around the globe. The Covid-19 outbreak has had
a far-reaching effect on essentially every area of development. In practically every nation on the planet,
COVID-19 has had a terrible effect on people's health and livelihoods. One of the biggest challenges or
the obstacles for the young people everywhere was the access to quality education leading from primary
