The main conflict is an internal one that follows our main character Louis throughout the entire story.

It
is his uphill battle against the sands of time that degrade his humanity and human passions. It’s a
struggle to keep hold of who and what he is. He tries to hang onto things such as love throughout the
whole story, but his relationships always dramatically fail for one reason or another. With Babette, it
was because she believed him to be a demon from hell and hated him for it. This led to him breaking his
no kill rule on humans. He started to kill humans every night after that to satiate his hunger. His second
lover Claudia was killed near the end of the story by rival vampires. When she died, so did Louis’s human
passions. His love for his third lover, Armand, also died when Claudia did, and they grew apart. Louis was
also enraged when he learned that Armand had a hand in Claudia’s death. With each death Louis
became less human, colder in attitude, and more mechanical like other vampires. His internal conflict
seemed to be resolved by the end of the story, he finally let go of what made him human and is now
weary of immortality.
