Gina graduated from an associate degree program in nursing and is working on a


medical-surgical unit. Gina was introduced to Sue, a nursing student who is
currently completing a clinical rotation on the medical-surgical unit. Gina shares
with Sue about pursuing different avenues in nursing. Sue remains uncertain of

What is the difference between a general nursing practice and a
specialized nursing practice?

General nursing practice requires no additional experience or education to


work in a given position.
Specialized nursing practice occurs when nurses work in a specific clinical
area and requires additional education or certifications.

2. Sue is considering becoming a registered nurse first assistant. What does this
job entail?

A RNFA entails assisting the surgeon in performing a safe operation with optimal
results for the patient. They are responsible for independent nursing
behaviors.
