Introduction : For the nurse opportunities mean to develop her own carrier in nursing. There
was a time when professional nurses had very little choice of service because nursing was mostly
centered in hospital and bedside nursing. Nursing practice has changed greatly recent years
whether aged to the kind of carrier opportunities available to professional nurses. Not only is
there a greater variety of nursing practice within a given area nursing. The working situation for
nurses is very different today. Whether unmarried or married male or female diploma or degree
programms, there are wide opportunities for services. Career opportunities are more valid now
for number of reasons. Many of these are from outside of the nursing profession.

 Personal fulfillment: A nurse career brings a person a great deal of personal fulfillment. The
nurse is able to choose her own path in the career. She also understands that she is making a
difference in the lives of the people she cares on a daily basis. The profession also allow for
career advancement, often giving the nurse an additional sense of personal fulfillment.
 Choose their own specialization: the ability to select a specialty is an important aspect. And
benefit of the nursing career. Nurses have choices in their specialty beginning in nursing
school and continuing throughout their careers. the ability to choose your own specialization
is an excellent benefit for those that choose a career in nursing
 Opportunities for Advancement: Nurses’ career offer many opportunities for advancement.
Armed with a nursing degree, many nurses are able to advance into management, sometimes
even into company leadership positions. The opportunities for advancement are great in the
profession, and allow the nurse the ability to become a leader in healthcare.
 Job security: job security is a featured benefit of the nursing career. Nurses will always be a
necessary part of the healthcare system. And hospitals are unable to function without them.
The job growth outlook of nurses is excellent with the aging population. Job security is an
excellent benefit for anyone interested in the career as a nurse.

Career opportunities for different nursing courses:

For ANM:
 Works as a multipurpose health worker male and female at sub centres.
 With experience and training can be promoted to lady health visitor.
 For career development, can do diploma in general nursing and midwife of 3 ½ years
course .A.N.M’s are relaxed for six month during 3rd year of G.N.M course

For G.N.M:

 General nurse and midwife can work.


As a staff nurse/sister grade II in the hospital.
In various health programmes
Can go abroad after clearance certain exam as per requirement of country
 She can do POST BASIC B.SC nursing :2years
Nurse can work :
 In hospital: as a staff nurses to give care to patients. She is promoted as a sister grade I,
A.N.S, D.N.S and nursing superident with experience.
 In community: as a public health nurse to prevent, maintain, treat and rehabilitate the
people as per their needs. Participates in various health programs. She can work as an
industrial nurse, school health nurse etc.
 She can complete various international exams and can go abroad to work as a nurse.
 She can conduct researches .
 She can work as a clinical instructors in schools and colleges to teach nursing programs
such as A.N.M & G.N.M
 To develop her career she can do masters of nursing
 She can do certificate courses of nurses to becomes specialized in particular field.

For B.Sc nursing:

In hospital : As a staff nurse to give care to the patient’s. She is promoted as a sister grade
I,ANS,DNS, and Nursing superintendent with experience.

In community : as a public health nurse to prevent , maintain , treat health, rehabilitate as per
their needs. Participate in various health program. She can work as an industrial nurse, school
health nurse etc.

 She can compete international exams and can go abroad to work as a nurse.
 She can conduct research
 She can work as clinical instructor in schools and colleges to teach nursing program such
as ANM, GNM.
 To develop her career .she can do master of nursing

 She can do the certificate courses of nursing to become specialized in particular field.

FOR M.SC nursing :

 M.SC nurse with experience 1 year can work


 As a lecturer( if have three years of teaching ) in college of nursing to teach various
programmes of nursing .if have more experience , according can work as a reader ,
associate professor, professor, vice principal and principal of college of nursing.
 As clinical nurse in hospital and with experienced can work as a sister grade I
/ANS/DNS/NS/C.N.O. once promoted, she does administrative along with clinical work.
 As a researcher she can conducts research on various aspect to improve the health of
people.
 She can work as a public health nurse, District health nurse and directorate of nursing and
also at state nursing council as a registrar and Indian nursing council as a president, vice
president etc. with experienced.
 She can do further her, M.PHILL or PhD in nursing.
 She can enhance her self as well as of other’s knowledge by organizing workshop,
seminar etc.

1 .Hospital nursing services: the function of the professional nurse in the hospital is usually
broader than any kind of nurses. Once a place for acutely ill only the hospital has generally
become a health center which comprehensive health service to the patient, his family and the
community. Health and family planning services are often include in what is offered by the
general hospital. Thus the nurse in the hospital will be actively involved in many different ways
on meeting all the needs of the patients , physically , emotionally , spiritually ,and socially .
nurse may participate in direct nursing care and bedside nursing , health teaching , planning for
care in the hoe , rehabilitation and services to the outpatient .

Possible position for the nurse in the hospital are given below:
 Staff nurse
 Part time staff nurse
 Ward sister/charge nurse/supervisor
 Deputy nursing superintendent
 Assisting nursing superintendent
 Director of nursing

 Staff nurse provide: Direct care to the patient or a group of patients. Assists in ward
management and supervision.
 Part time nurse : same works as a staff nurse but works 6 hour with no evening , night
or Sunday or holidays duties.
 Ward sister /charge sister/supervisor: is responsible to the nursing superintendent for
the nursing care management of ward or units.
 Deputy nursing superintendent: it is responsible to the nursing superintendent and
assist in the nursing administration of the hospital.
 duty nursing services care or management of more then one ward or unit on a floor or on
unit or within a department .
 Director of nursing ; is responsible to a medical management for both nursing
 Assisting nursing superintendent: it is responsible to the nursing superintendent and
education with in teaching hospital.

2.Nursing services in the school of nursing

 Nursing tutor (B.sc nursing or M.sc nursing ) or a diploma in nursing education and
administration.
 Clinical instructor(B.sc nursing or M.sc nursing with or without experience)

 Principal , school of nursing (M.sc nursing or B.sc nursing and should have teaching
experience in school of nursing not less than 5 years )
 Public health nurse or community health nurse: (diploma in public health administration )

3 .Nursing services in college of nursing

 Principal colleges of nursing (m.sc nursing or equivalent degree or Phd in nursing or


other doctorate degree and teaching experience in college not less than 5 year )
 Lecturer ( M.sc nursing)
 Senior lecturer : experience as junior lecturer
 Assistant professor : ( M.sc nursing or PhD in nursing with any specialty )and have
teaching experience in the college of nursing not less than 5 years
 Clinical instructor : B.sc nursing or M.sc nursing with or without experience
 Professor( M.sc nursing or PhD in nursing with any specialty and should have teaching
experience in the college of nursing not less than 5 years.

Teaching in nursing

Professional nurses who are interested in teaching have a broad scope. From which to choose
. teaches in nursing are needed in all areas of clinical practice and theory .all teacher will
have responsibility for planning teaching and supervising learning experiences for the
students :acting as a advisor to the student ; and keeping up to date with what must be taught
in many institutions, the nurse in nursing education will share responsibilities with those in
nursing services in the hospital usually as a departmental supervisor.

Positions open to those who are employed primarily to teach are described below:

 Clinical Instructor: is responsible to the dean or nursing superintendent for


supervision and teaching of student in public health nursing. Among other
responsibilities are those of being responsible planning assignment of patients’ ,
maintain records and help students in extra curriculum activities.
 Teacher /tutor: is responsible to the dean ie nurse superintendent for teaching
nursing subject. Has a variety of responsibilities including clinical supervision
helping to conduct examination guiding and counseling students and maintained class
room facilities .
 Senior tutor/teacher: in addition to responsibilities of the tutor is responsible for
teaching and assisting in the administration of the school of nursing thus include
selection of students maintained of records, planning and evaluating courses.

Director/dean/principal tutor: Is responsible to the director of nurses or medical


superintendent for the administration of school nursing. This includes overall supervision
of teaching, in services education, guidance and counseling of the students, recruitment,
records, examinations and development of school of nursing.

4. In community health nursing

 Community health nurse/ community nursing officer( B.sc nursing or G.N.M)


 Health supervisor
 Nurse midwifery(G.N.M or B.SC nursing)

Community health nursing is the term currently used to represent the original term of public
health nursing. The health of the original term of public becomes a major concern of the
government some years ago when it was found that facilities to meet health needs of the
Indian rural population were most inadequate. This recommended by the Bhore report. These
recommendations were the implanted through the five years plan.

The primary health centre supplied with a medical officer and other related health personnel,
is the basic unit established in the rural area preventive medicines is the major aim of this
work. Service given are antennal clinic, maternal and child welfare, family planning
immunizations, health teaching regarding sanitation. Professional nurse serve in these units
as staff nurses and supervisors. These responsibilities here may include both administration
and education when nursing students are also present.

5. Nursing service in industry

Industrial Nurse (G.N.M and B.Sc Nursing)

Nursing service in industrial has developed rapidly as more large industrial companies have
developed here. Services to industrial workers vary from simple first aid procedure in a very
basic clinic environment to a specialist services in well equipped hospitals. The functions and
hours of duty for the professional nurse in an industrial hospital will be similar to those in
most general hospital nursing services.

6. Nursing service as a private duty nurse

(B.sc Nursing/Post Basic B.sc Nursing)

Private duty nurse a registered nurse or licensed nurse who provide nursing services to
patients at home or any other setting in accordance with physician order . patient may receive
continue nursing services beyond the scope of care available from certified home health care
agency (CHHCA)

7. NURSING SRVICES IN THE RED CROS SOCIETY

The Indian Red Cross society was established in 1920. With the major aims of helping other
from a natural stand point. It is most active is giving relief to needing and suffering people at
time of major disaster and in time of war. Professional nurse are also being used to teach

Practical nursing to non professional personnel in hospitals this is called the ‘volunteer
nurses ‘aid services.

8. Military nursing services

(G.N.M/B.SC NURSING or M.SC nursing) and were given the rank from lieutenant to
Brigadler military nursing was the earlist type of organized nursing in India . The function of
the nurse in military. Services will vary from direct care in bed side nursing to teaching :
supervision and administration depending on qualification and rank military services offer
attractive economic and security benefits. Salaries are very high compare to those in other
nursing .

9. Nursing Services in abroad

(G.N.M/ B.SC With or without experience)Many professional nurse are now working in
abroad . The conveniences along with attractive salary and promising professional
opportunities are factor which have caused the major increase in number. Even through very
complex arrangements to work abroad may take a long time to complete especially with
regard to application foreigner, which registration, passport, vise nurse continue to go
abroad .nurse sac work as immigrants which means to go abroad on a visa which an
indentifies length of stay. Nursing services abroad can also be done on a contract basis.

10. Nursing services in other areas

Like research and writing and editing books, full time secretaries of the state level with the
TNAI (Rich experience in the profession)
