1. General

This work constitutes the construction of sand seals on existing bituminous pavements which
shall consist of the application of binder followed immediately by covering with coarse sand
and rolling using Pneumatic Tired Roller.

Step 1 –Setting out

The area of the sand sealing to be applied shall be marked using road marking.

Step 2 –Preparation of Surface

Prior to the application of the binder the surface shall be dried, thoroughly swept and
rendered clean of clay dust and any other objectionable matter.

Step 3 – Application of binder

The approved CRS1 shall be applied uniformly at a rate of 1 l/m2 at ambient


temperature using hand sprayer .The rate of application should be checked by tray test
at every sections.

Step 4 – Spreading of sand

The surface where the binder has been applied shall be immediately covered with
approved sand using shovels at an approximate rate of 8 cubic meters /1000 square
meter and excess material shall be wiped off and shall be immediately rolled with a
Pneumatic Tired Roller until the sand is firmly embedded in the binder. The road
shall be opened to the traffic after 20 minutes of curing period or more as directed by
the Engineer.

6. Supervision

Position Responsibilities
Site Engineer Perform the sand sealing on the basis of method
statement & specification.
Quality Control Currying out all kind of inspection in accordance with
Inspector (QCI) Quality Procedure and Method Statement
Supervisor All setting out works in accordance with Method
Statement

7. Inspection

According to the attached Inspection and Test Plan “H” point, “W” point inspection
and tests shall be notified to QC Inspector. QC Inspector shall inspect site works as
schedule and report the Check List to Quality Assurance Engineer (QAE).
The Inspection and Test Plan for relevant working area shall be available on site for
the Resident Engineer to see. Upon completion of the Inspection and Test Plan, the
ITP shall be maintained at the MAGA- CDIG Project Office and submit to the RE
with the progress claim.

9. Safety Provision

Warning signs shall be displayed in advance as well as in working area. Working area
shall be barricaded with barricading tapes with painted barrels or by placing traffic
cones. Traffic warden jackets are to be provided to all flagmen, workers and all staff.
