5. Application of Wearing course.

Step 1 –Setting out

The setting out shall be done accordance with the specific requirements of the contact
and shall be set out with the lines and levels in according to the Construction
drawings and final design levels of the Wearing course.

Step 2–Surface Preparation

The selected section of one side of road shall be closed for traffic and diverted to the
other side. The two flagmen with two walky-talky shall be designated to either side to
control the traffic. The surface of the binder course which is going to apply wearing
course shall be washed thoroughly, swept to remove all dust and extraneous material.
The surface shall be dried using the air compressor before applying tack coat.
When the wearing course is completed one half of the road, the longitudinal joint
edge should be vertically cut to line carefully by using asphalt cutter, clean and apply
thin coat of tack coat on the surface before laying the next half.

Step 3 – Applying Tack coat

Tack coat shall be applied on binder course road prior to laying the Asphalt concrete
mixture to enhance the bond between the two layers. CRS 01 Shall be used for the
Tack coat and applied at a rate of 0.3 liter/m 2 by means of a Hand sprayer. Field tray
test shall be carried out to check the application rate of Tack coat as one test per day.
The tack coat shall be allowed to cure about 20 min before applying the Wearing
course.

Step 4 - Laying Asphalt mixture

The material shall be furnished to the Central Mixing plant, mixed and transported to
the site using dumped trucks. The Mix shall be delivered to the paver at the site a
minimum temperature of 135 0C. The Mix shall be laid immediately after
transporting, by means of approved mechanical pavers. A laboratory representative
shall be appointed at the site for monitor the mix temperature. Hot mix samples shall
be collected from the mixture before laying for the test of Wearing content, aggregate
grading and other properties of the mix as one sample per day or more as per
Engineer’s instruction.

Step 5 Compaction
Immediately after the Mix has been spread as struck off, the surface shall be checked
and any irregularities are adjusted. Rolling shall commence as soon as the material
will support the roller with undue displacement or cracking. First in the break down
rolling stage, paved stretch including all joints and edges shall be compacted with 8
ton Steel wheeled tandem roller at a speed of 3 km/h, 2 no of passes. And then the
intermediate rolling shall be done by means of Pneumatic tired roller at a speed of 5
km/h, 12 no of passes. Breakdown and intermediate rolling shall be carried out at a
temperature not less than 135 0C and 115 0C respectively.

The final rolling shall be completed before the temperature of the mix falls below
900C. Finally the surface irregularities shall be checked using standard straight edge
Traffic shall not be allowed over newly laid surfaces at least for 12 hours after laying
or until the temperature of the newly laid surfacing has achieved the ambient
temperature.
The core samples shall be made as per couple for 500 m 2 for the density test of
compacted layer using core cutter before allowing to traffic and the holes shall be
filled with similar hot mix and compacted appropriately. The density of all samples
taken shall not be less than 98% of Marshall density at the point appropriate to the
locations.
