Vibration

Introduction: -

Vibration can be defined as the mechanical phenomenon where any motion (forward,
backward and oscillation motion) that occur about some equilibrium point.

Examples are: -

• When we are sitting in our home or any place where we are fully or any place or partially
touching the ground and suddenly earthquake comes which shakes everything, Its which
shakes everything, Its Vibration.
• when a fully automatic machine stops rotating in the end and in the end vibrates too
much is vibration. The extra ordinary motion of anything around us is considered.as
vibrations.
Some other example of vibration in our lives are: -

• Our heart beats

• Our lungs oscillate
• We hear because our ear drums vibrate
• Vibration makes us snore
• Sound waves allow us to hear
• We move because of oscillation of legs
Types of Vibration Types of Vibration Are: -

1.Free vibration

2.Forced vibration

Free VIBRATION: -

When there no external excitations force on body or body itself vibrate due to its own elastic
property is called free vibration. This type of vibration occurs when a system is set off with
an initial input system and then allow to vibration freely. Example: - plucked guitar string

FORCED VIBRATION: -

When a body vibrate under external time varying disturbance like-load, disturbance,
displacement and velocity. This external physical phenomenon may be periodical, random
input or steady random input or steady state. Example: - Reciprocating engine vibration
Main Causes of Vibration Are:-

• Resonance

• Looseness

• Repeating forces

.
• Change in direction with time, such as the force generated by a rotating unbalance.
• Change in amplitude or intensity with time, such as the unbalanced magnetic forces
generated in a motor due to unequal air gap between the armature and stator.
• Friction between rotating and stationary machine components like between bow and
the violin string to vibrate.
• Impacts, such as gear tooth contacts or the impacts generated by the rolling elements
of a bearing passing over flaws in the bearing raceways.
• Randomly generated turbulence force devices such as fans, blowers, pumps, gas
turbines or boilers.
• Improper installation without proper or improper mounts, isolators etc.
• Flanking transmission path in piping, building etc
• Unbalanced force in the different parts of the machine
• Earthquakes
Necessity of vibration are: -

• In musical instruments

• It is used in Mobile phones.

• Vibration can be used for useful purposes such as vibration testing equipment’s,
vibratory conveyors, hoppers, sieves and compactors.

• Motion of turning fork

• Vibration in loudspeaker
• stress relieving
• for structures designed to support the high-speed engines and turbines are subjected to
vibration
• Vibration is found very fruitful in mechanical workshops such as in improving the
efficiency of machining, casting, forging and welding techniques and earthquakes for
geological research.
• It is useful for the propagation of sound
