Engineering Management Assignment Midterm

1. Are all effective organizations also efficient? Discuss. If you had to choose
between being effective or being efficient, which one would you say is
more important and why?
This really depends on what stage the organization is at in executing. These
things are both important. In terms of getting things off the ground and making things
happen, producing then effectiveness is what you want to focus on because regardless
of how efficient organization is, if it’s not effective its inherently not efficient. Now if the
organization is effective you can focus on efficiency which would allow the organization
to become more effective as well. These two things really work hand in hand, so
honestly there is not definitive answer to this question, it depends on where the
organization is and where they want to be.

2. Is your college instructor a manager? Discuss in terms of both planning,

organizing, leading, and controlling.
Yes, my college instructor is a manager because he is the responsible person to
educate the students. An instructor teaches and executes the objectives and lessons of
the subject. In terms of planning, instructor creates goals on how he is going to impart
knowledge to the students effectively and efficiently. He acts like a leader or like a role
model for the student to learn from his mistakes and experiences. He also organizes
and allocates the time; even cost to the subject he teaches. Lastly, he controls the
productivity of the students by giving activities, quizzes, and exams. After all of this is
done, I can then conclude whether my college instructor is effective or not.
3. " Organization that fail to plan are planning to fail". Do you agree or
disagree with the statement? Explain your position.
If you fail to plan you will drift aimlessly. You need to be definite, to have your
occasional sights set on the big prize, but mainly on the process/steps that gets you
there. With any project having a plan of attack helps with progress and goal attainment.
Rushing into a project without consideration about how to progress will result in
unforeseen problems that hamper goal attainment. Proper planning and preparation
prevent poor performance.
