SUITCASE CAR
INTRODUCTION
The idea behind this project is to design a foldable vehicle to be used for spying and proper
personal transportation with increased mobility. This car will be foldable and used for personal
transportation purpose with a compact and easy to carry anywhere car, "The Suitcase Car".
Back in 1991, a Mazda engineer asked himself what could be done to provide proper personal
transportation with increased mobility.
They made a three-wheeler that could be folded into a suitcase and could reach 43 km/h (27
mph). The assembly takes about 15-20 seconds. For a minimum safety it was equipped with turn
signals, brake lights and even headlights to see and to be seen on the road.
Power was provided by a 40cc two-stroke engine and provided the small fuel tank, it could run
for approximately 2 hours.
The three-wheeled suitcase never saw production though. Who knows, maybe the automaker is
waiting for the right technology to be developed and build the real folding flying car from the
cartoons.
To make a car that is foldable and its mechanical structure could be so that it looks like a
suitcase on folding and can be carried in hand easily.

PROPOSED DESIGN:
OBJECTIVE
To design a Suitcase Car that could be folded up to form a suitcase and can open up to form a car
to carry weight of single person and to be used for personal transportation.
The car should be electric powered and driven with the help of powerful dc geared motors.
Torque handling capacity will be increased using a chain drive mechanism with a coupled shaft
for the two dc geared motors. Onboard battery (hidden) facility will be provided and turning with
the help of a steering mechanism.
PROPOSED MECHANISM
CHAIN DRIVE MECHANISM WITH COUPLED SHAFT
Chain drive is a way of transmitting mechanical power from one place to another. It is often
used to convey power to the wheels of a vehicle, particularly bicycles and motorcycles. It is also
used in a wide variety of machines besides vehicles.
Most often, the power is conveyed by a roller chain, known as the drive chain or transmission
chain, passing over a sprocket gear, with the teeth of the gear meshing with the holes in the
links of the chain. The gear is turned, and this pulls the chain putting mechanical force into the
system. Another type of drive chain is the Morse chain, invented by the Morse Chain Company
of Ithaca, New York, USA. This has inverted teeth.
Sometimes the power is output by simply rotating the chain, which can be used to lift or drag
objects. In other situations, a second gear is placed and the power is recovered by attaching
shafts or hubs to this gear. Though drive chains are often simple oval loops, they can also go
around corners by placing more than two gears along the chain; gears that do not put power into

the system or transmit it out are generally known as idler-wheels. By varying the diameter of the
input and output gears with respect to each other, the gear ratio can be altered, so that, for
example, the pedals of a bicycle can spin all the way around more than once for every rotation of
the gear that drives the wheels.
