The Believer’s Authority (Part-3)

Review:

FIVE DIMENSIONS TO OUR SPIRITUAL AUTHORITY

1. Redemptive Authority : Our Authority Because of Christ's Triumph
2. Inherited Authority : Our Authority As Sons & Daughters of God
3. Positional Authority : Our Authority In Christ
4. Delegated Authority : Our Authority As Christ's Representatives
5. Empowered Authority : Our Authority Through The Anointing

Today:

DELEGATED AUTHORITY : OUR AUTHORITY AS CHRIST'S REPRESENTATIVES

Matthew 10:1,7-8
1 And when He had called His twelve disciples to Him, He gave them power over
unclean spirits, to cast them out, and to heal all kinds of sickness and all kinds of
disease.
7 And as you go, preach, saying, 'The kingdom of heaven is at hand.'
8 Heal the sick, cleanse the lepers, raise the dead, cast out demons. Freely you have
received, freely give.

The Lord Jesus gave them power. He delegated power. The Greek word is ‘exousia’
meaning delegated authority. Authority bestowed on a representative who acts on
behalf of another to carry out the assignment.

Luke10:17,19
17 Then the seventy returned with joy, saying, "Lord, even the demons are subject to
us in Your name."
19 Behold, I give you the authority (exousia) to trample on serpents and scorpions and
over all the power (dunamis) of the enemy, and nothing shall by any means hurt you.

There are two Greek words that are typically translated authority and power: exousia
meaning “delegated authority” and dunamis meaning “ability”. In Luke 10:19 Jesus said
“I give you exousia over all the dunamis of the enemy”. The delegated authority that is
vested in us gives us the right to oppose and overthrow every evil work that the devil
can do.

Sermon Notes

This delegated authority extends to all of us and was not limited just for the apostles.

We state this for the following reasons:

1, In Matthew 16:18,19 the Lord Jesus clearly expressed that the Church He is building
will exercise authority over the powers of darkness. And the Church He is building will
have the keys to bind and loose on earth, as it is in heaven. So the Church carries
delegated authority.
2, In Matthew 28:18-20, as part of the Great Commission, the early disciples were to
pass on all that they were commanded, which would include the command to preach
the Gospel of the Kingdom, heal and deliver. Hence divine authorization is passed on to
us through the Great Commission.
3, In Mark 16:17-18 the authority to cast out demons and do signs and wonders is in the
name of Jesus. Believers today have the right to use the name of Jesus just as the
apostles or early disciples did. The name of Jesus has not lost any of its power. We pray
in His name, and we also exercise authority in His name.

Mark 16:17-18
17 And these signs will follow those who believe: In My name they will cast out
demons; they will speak with new tongues;
18 they will take up serpents; and if they drink anything deadly, it will by no means
hurt them; they will lay hands on the sick, and they will recover."

We have delegated authority, that is divine authorization to act in Jesus’ place, to do

what He would do, to carry out His will and purpose. This is what it means to act “in His
name”. We exercise our delegated authority as we use His name. “In my name”, Jesus
said, “they will cast out demons”. His name, the name of Jesus is our “badge of
authority”. As believers we have been given the legal right (the power of attorney,
which is delegated authority) to use the name of Jesus. All that has been invested in that
name (Philippians 2:9-11) is at our disposal.

HOW DO WE EXERCISE OUR AUTHORITY?

We primarily exercise authority through the words we speak.

We speak words of command in the name of Jesus.

We will summarize how to do so, in three simple actions:

#1, Resist - Exercising Authority To Protect & Prevent
#2, Bind/Loose/Pull Down - Exercising Authority To Stop Or Destroy
#3, Cast Out - Exercising Authority To Advance

Sermon Notes

Resist

James 4:7
Therefore submit to God. Resist the devil and he will flee from you.

resist = to stand against, to oppose

“resist” - This indicates that there will be times when we will have to use our authority
to stand our ground and defend our God-given territory and counteract any efforts of
the enemy to enter in. Satan is like a thief coming to “steal, kill and destroy” but we are
not helpless against his efforts. Our God-given authority gives us the ability to successful
stand against him.

Example: You say, ‘satan, In Jesus name resist you from touching my body with this
sickness. I refuse this sickness and disease and declare that by the stripes of Jesus I am
healed. I declare that the Lord has forgiven me of all sins and healed me of all diseases.’

Bind/Loose/Pull Down

Luke 13:11-12
11 And behold, there was a woman who had a spirit of infirmity eighteen years, and
was bent over and could in no way raise herself up.
12 But when Jesus saw her, He called her to Him and said to her, "Woman, you are
loosed from your infirmity."

“bind” – We have the authority to “bind” a certain work, effort, or strategy of the devil.
To “bind” a work of the devil is as though we were “tying his hands” and making him
inoperative for that task. For example, if there was a situation where you know that
there was a definite attack of the devil at a certain time against your marriage, you as a
believer can exercise your authority and “bind” the operations or efforts of the enemy
in that situation. This will allow you and your spouse to work out or work though the
marital problems, implying that you will still have to work out what ever issues there
may be. Now does this mean that the devil has been permanently bound off your
marriage and you will never again face an attack of the devil in your marriage. You bind
the working or efforts of the devil in that situation at that time. This does not mean that
those demons are permanently bound forever and ever and that you will never again
face a demonic attack in the future.

Sermon Notes

“loose” – In Luke 13, we read about a woman who had a “spirit of infirmity eighteen
years and was bent over” and could not straighten herself up. Jesus said that “Satan has
bound” her. When the Lord Jesus exercised His spiritual authority to set her free, He
said to the woman, “you are loosed from your infirmity”. To “loose” someone from the
work of the devil is to set them free from some form of bondage or captivity. You are
exercising your authority to bring release or freedom into that persons’ life. You are
“proclaiming liberty to the captives” and setting “at liberty those who are oppressed”
(Luke 4:18). You issue a word of command as “In Jesus name you are loosed from this
bondage” or you say “Devil, in Jesus name I command you to lose this person and let
him/her go free from…”. You address that specific area in which that person may be in
bondage, say some sort of addiction, sickness, fear, depression, or other oppression.

“pull down” – as used in 2 Corinthians 10:4-6. Through the authority and the weapons
that God has given us we are able to pull down or tear down strongholds. Strongholds
are places of power or dominance. This could apply either to an individual, a group of
individuals or geographic areas, etc. We know that a stronghold has been pulled down
when satan and his demons no longer have the same level of control, power, influence,
and dominance in that person(s) or place.

Example, you say: ‘In Jesus name I bind every spirit of confusion and strife from affecting
my home and family. In Jesus name I destroy the works of the enemy. I declare that
there will be the voice of rejoicing and salvation in my home’

Cast Out

Matthew 8:16
When evening had come, they brought to Him many who were demon-possessed. And
He cast out the spirits with a word, and healed all who were sick,

This has to do with evicting or expelling demonic powers from their immediate
habitation. We use our God-given authority and force the demon(s) to leave a certain
person or place where that demon(s) has been residing.

Side Note: we are not casting the demon(s) out of the earth nor are we sending them to
hell (their place of torment – Matthew 25:41). That will take place at the appointed
time. Jesus said that when a demon spirit is cast out of a person the spirit “goes through
dry places, seeking rest” (Matthew 12:43). This implies that the demon spirit is not sent
to hell when cast out of a person.

Sermon Notes

Example when ministering to a person, you say ‘In Jesus name I command every spirit of
infirmity, every spirit of pain and every spirit of arthritis to leave now. I command,
healing and wholeness for this person in Jesus name’.

USE THE NAME OF JESUS AND THE WORD OF GOD’S WORD

Always speak in the name of Jesus and speak the Word of God, say what the Word of
God says about that situation. The Word of God is the sword of the Spirit.

SALVATION CALL
If you ask, does God love me? We can tell you what the Bible says: John 3:16, Romans
5:8
If you ask, how can I have my sins forgiven? We can tell you what the Bible says: Acts
10:43; 1 John 2:2,12
If you ask, what is the way to God? We can tell you what the Bible says: John 14:6

If you ask, where can I find salvation? We can tell you what the Bible says: Acts 4:12
If you ask, what must I do to experience salvation? We can tell you what the Bible says:
Acts 16:30-31
As an act of your own free choice, we invite you to make this decision to follow Jesus.

LIFE GROUP STUDY GUIDE

Sunday February 20, 2022

The Believer’s Authority (Part-3)

The is a simple guide for use in Life Group discussions. Our objective is to focus on the
application of the Sunday sermon - how each one is becoming a doer of the Word and
building their life on God's Holy Word. The Life Group meeting would normally last for 2
hours. Each Life Group would have up to 12-15 people.

Preparation
To prepare for the Life Group meeting, you can listen to the Sermon Key Points (sermon
summary in five minutes) or the full-length Sunday sermon. You can also review the
Sunday Sermon notes. All these are available in the "All Peoples Church Bangalore"
mobile App or online at our sermons page . Pray for the Life Group meeting and invite
the work and ministry of the Holy Spirit.

Welcome
The Life Group meeting may commence with a time of prayer, worship, and a fun
activity.

LISTEN to God's Word

Read the following Scripture reference: Matthew 10:1,7-8; Luke10:17,19; Mark 16:17-18

INVESTIGATE God's Word Together

Please discuss a few of these together, giving time for people to share their insights. We
encourage each one individually to make notes of their personal learning during the
Group discussion.

1, Discuss “Delegated Authority” – explaining what this means/implies. Do believers

today have the same delegated authority in Jesus’ name, as believers in New Testament
times?

2, Discuss the 3 ways we can exercise authority. Relate it to practical scenarios:

#1, Resist - Exercising Authority To Protect & Prevent
#2, Bind/Loose/Pull Down - Exercising Authority To Stop Or Destroy
#3, Cast Out - Exercising Authority To Advance

apcwo.org | contact@apcwo.org 6 All Peoples Church & World Outreach, Bangalore, India
Sermon Notes

If time permits, each one can take a few (3 minutes max) to share one or two key
learning and how they see themselves applying it into their specific life situations.
Encourage each one to participate and share.

FELLOWSHIP by sharing your life and spiritual journey

Each one takes a few (3 minutes max) to share anything from their walk with God,
something God has been teaching them, a testimony of answered prayer or a specific
challenge that they would like prayer for. Encourage each one to participate and share.

ENCOURAGE each other by praying and ministering to one another

Get into small groups of two or three and take turns to thank God and pray for each
other in the light of what was learnt today. Listen to the Holy Spirit. Expect the gifts of
the Holy Spirit to flow bringing healing, releasing miracles, prophecy, etc.

Regroup and pray together for:

1, families to be protected and strengthened
2, a mighty outpouring of God's Holy Spirit on us as a church and through us to bless
many others in our city and nation. Nothing but a mighty work of God's Spirit can change
our city and nation.
3, for the BUILD TO IMPACT project - for God's hand to guide us through the land search
and acquisition process, and for finances to be more than enough to get this project
done.

Close by thanking God together.
