2
Aerobic Gymnastics is the ability to perform continuous complex and high intensity
movement patterns to music, which originate from traditional aerobic dance. The
routine must demonstrate continuous movement, flexibility, strength and utilisation of
the seven basic steps, with a high degree of perfectly executed elements of difficulty.

Aerobic Movement Patterns are combinations of aerobic dance steps together with arm
movement patterns, performed to music to create dynamic, rhythmic and continuous
sequences of high and low impact movements.
Routines are performed by an individual athlete. The athlete may be either Male or
Female. The categories are Individual Male or Individual Female.

Aerobic Gymnastics comprises the following competition categories
•Routines are performed by two athletes of opposite sex. The athletes must be one
Male and one Female.
•Routines are performed by three athletes. The athletes can be any combination of
Male or Female.
•Routines are performed by a minimum of four athletes and a maximum of six athletes.
The athletes can be any combination of Male or Female.
It is a type of competitive aerobics involving
complicated choreography, rhythmic and acrobatic gymnastics with elements of
aerobics. Performance is divided into categories by age, sex and groups (individual,
mixed pairs and trios) and are judged on the following elements: dynamic and static
strength, jumps and leaps, kicks, balance and flexibility. Ten exercises are mandatory:
four consecutive high leg kicks, patterns.
A maximum of ten elements from following families are allowed: push-ups,
supports and balances, kicks and splits, jumps and leaps. Elements of tumbling such
as handsprings, handstands, back flips, and aerial somersaults are prohibited. Scoring is
by judging of artistic quality, creativity, execution, and difficulty of routines. Sport
aerobics has state, national, and international competitions, but is not an Olympic sport.

Aerobic Gymnastics – energy to burn

Aerobic Gymnastics is perhaps the most dynamic and energetic of all the gymnastic
disciplines. Finding its roots in the group fitness and aerobic classes of the late 80’s,

3
Aerobic Gymnastics is a recent addition to the stable of gymnastic disciplines and boasts
a growing number of enthusiasts throughout the UK.

Immediately recognisable for its high energy and heart pounding routines set to lively
‘up-tempo’ music, Aerobic Gymnastics is popular with both males and females and
offers opportunities for participation as individuals, mixed pairs, trios and groups. Unlike
any other discipline, gymnasts wear aerobic trainers.

An aerobic routine is performed on a 7 x 7 m sprung wooden floor area (for individuals)

and a slightly larger 10 x 10 m area for Mixed Pairs, Trios and the Groups.

Aerobic Gymnastics last up to 1 minute 30 seconds.

The perfect sport for those who are looking for a great way to keep in shape, have a
good ear for music and a willingness to take their cardio-vascular fitness to new levels,
Aerobic Gymnastics is gaining a solid foot hold in the UK.

Aerobic routines are not only great fun to train and compete but also to watch. The
upbeat music constantly keeps the audience alert and involved with the gymnast,
whose aim is to captivate with enthusiasm and dynamism.

The first thing that blows away audiences watching Aerobic Gymnastics is the speed
and cardio-vascular nature of the routine, closely followed by the synchronisation,
interactions, lifts and ever changing aerobic movement patterns of pairs, trios and
groups.

The basis of all aerobic routines lies in the performance and combination of seven basic
aerobic movements involving both the arms and legs: March, Jog, Skip, Knee Lift, Kick,
Jack and Lunge. Mastering these movements is often the focus of introductory aerobic
gymnastics programmes.

As gymnasts improve their co-ordination and speed of movement they sequence

together counts of continuous complex and high intensity movement patterns to ‘up-
tempo’ music.

A winning routine will typically show clean and balanced movements with perfect
technique. The routine will include at least one element from the 4 element groups of
dynamic strength, static strength, jumps/leaps and flexibility/balance with a maximum
of 10 elements (for Individuals) or 12 elements  (for Mixed Pairs, Trios or Groups).

If you’ve got energy to burn then Aerobic Gymnastics is the sport for you.

Aerobic Gymnastics Rules

Aerobic gymnastics, also known as sports aerobics, is a competitive sport comprising of

complex, high-intensity movement and elements performed to music. An aerobic
gymnastics routine must continuously integrate the display of physical qualities like
coordination, flexibility and strength, with the perfect execution of traditional aerobics
movements.

There are three mandatory exercises: four consecutive high leg kicks, four consecutive
push-ups, as well as a phase beginning with four jumping jacks and comprising
32counts of standing movements and patterns. Additionally, a maximum of ten
elements from the following categories are allowed: push-ups, supports and
balances/holds, kicks and splits, jumps and leaps.

A perfect aerobics gymnastics routine must combine spectacular showmanship with

creative and interesting musicality, alongside complex aerobics steps.

Attire

In competition, women are required to wear a one-piece leotard, shimmer tan tights,
white socks and white runners, with their hair done up in a tight bun. Men, on the other
hand, must wear a unitard or body shorts, together with form-fitting shirts. These
clothes are often intricately designed with bright colours.

Choice of music

A good musical selection will help establish the structure and tempo, as well as the
theme of the exercise. It will support and highlight the performance. It must also be
used to inspire the overall choreography as well as contribute to the style and quality of
execution.

Choreography

All the components of the choreography must fit perfectly together in order to
transform a sport exercise into an artistic performance.

Form, posture and alignment

Form must be reflected by body positions and recognisable shapes, such as splits or
jumping jacks.
Posture and alignment will be judged according to the following:
● Torso, lower back, pelvis and contraction of the abdominal muscles.
● Upper body, carriage of the neck, shoulders and head relative to the spine.
● Feet relative to the ankles, knees and hip joint.

Summary:

Aerobic gymnastics is the ability to perform continuous complex and high

intensity aerobic movement patterns to music, which originates from traditional aerobic
exercises- the routine must demonstrate continuous movement, flexibility, strength and
the utilisation of the seven basic steps, with perfectly executed difficulty elements.
Combinations of basic aerobic steps together with arm movements: all performed to
music, to create dynamic, rhythmic and continuous sequences of high and low impact
movements. Routines should provide an adequate level of intensity.
