Instructions for choosing your personally assigned data for Weekly Assessment 2

For Question 1 you will need your personally assigned probability density function f(x) and range Rx
to solve the question. You will use the function and the range listed next to the last digit of your student
ID in the following table.

For Question 2 you will need your personally assigned variance (σ2) to solve the question. You will
use the value listed next to the last digit of your student ID in the following table.

Last Digit of Probability density function f(x) and Variance (σ2)

Student ID range Rx

3
𝑓(𝑥) = (8𝑥 − 𝑥 2 ), 𝑅𝑥 : 0 ≤ 𝑥 ≤ 8 50
0, 1, 2, 3, 4 256

5, 6, 7, 8, 9 3
𝑓(𝑥) = (6𝑥 − 𝑥 2 ), 𝑅𝑥 : 0 ≤ 𝑥 ≤ 6
108 75

For example, for a student with ID 34861 the last digit is 1. The student should use the information
given in the first raw.

Question 1. Continuous Probability Distributions [55 points]
Let X denote the time until recharge for a battery in a laptop (in minutes). The probability
density function of X is f(x), x  Rx .
Use your personally assigned function f(x) and range Rx to answer the following questions. The
function is based on the last digit of your student ID and is listed in the second page of this
document.
(a) Show that f(x) is a probability density function. [5 points]

(b) Find the probability P(X > 4). [10 points]

(c) Find the probability P(1.5 < X < 3). [10 points]

(d) Find the expected value (mean) of X. [10 points]

(e) Find the standard deviation of X. [10 points]

(f) Derive the cumulative distribution function of X, F(x). [10 points]

Question 2. Normal Distributions [45 points]

It is known that amounts of money spent (X) on books in a year by students is normally
distributed random variable with mean μ = 325 KWD and variance σ2 (KWD).
Answer the following questions using your personally assigned value of σ2. This value is based
on the last digit of your student ID and is listed in the second page of this document.

(a) Find the probability that the amount of money spent on books is more than 380 KWD.
[10 points]
(b) Find the probability that the amount of money spent on books is between 310 and 390
KWD. [10 points]
(c) What proportion of the students are spending either less than 300 KWD or more than 400
KWD? [10 points]
(d) Determine the symmetric interval around the mean within which is 85% of X. [15 points]
