Activity 1.1 Essay: Be able to explain in one to two paragraphs on why Teaching is one of the
most demanding of all professions.

Every profession can be challenging and some can be misunderstood. Every career can
be tough to adjust to and it takes a lot of effort and it may take years of practice before you
gather enough experience. From my perspective, one of the most difficult professions in this
world is teaching, due to the fact that the real teacher never stops what she’s meant to do.
Teaching is in you and with you 24/7. I do believe that being a teacher is very demanding
compared to other professions, to the point that teachers can't afford to have quality time for
their family and even for themselves anymore. The stress that they go through each day can be
significantly greater. Sometimes, they even have to use their own money for the materials that
are needed in school. They barely go on a vacation during summer with their loved ones because
most of the time they spend their free time planning and preparing for the upcoming school year.
They don't get off work early either, but they do get up earlier than anyone else. Indeed, being a
teacher is a very demanding profession.
Teaching may appear to be a difficult task, but knowing that you have made a difference
in the lives of your students can be very rewarding in your part. In this career you can meet
exciting and wonderful people, you will be able to develop your skills as well in different
aspects, and most importantly, you will be able to help many young learners to shape them into a
better generation.

Activity 1.2 Critical Questions: Reflect and write your answer to the following questions

1. What are the characteristics of an ideal teacher?

 Passionate about teaching
 Love for students
 Has an magnetic personality
 String rapport with students
 Effective discipline skills
 Good classroom management skills
 Good teaching style
 Strong command over subject matter
 Clear objectives for every lesson
 Good communication skills

2. What talents and skills do you have that can be shared or used when you become a full-fledge
teacher?
 I don’t have talents that can be shared to my future students but I do have skills which I
can used when I become a full-fledge teacher. Since I’m currently taking Bachelor of
Elementary Education, basically my students would be young children. We all know that
children are kind of naughty like that, so in that case most probably I can use my power
of patience. Further, I am a very creative person so I think I will be able to utilize my
creativity when it comes to presenting my lessons.

3. Think of teacher whom you consider to be talented and skillful in his/her teaching. How do
his/ her talents benefited his/her teaching?
 Mrs. Lotus Libao, my former adviser when I’m still in 12 th grade is very talented and
skillful teacher that I’ve ever met. She is very good in communicating, she will be able
to deliver her lesson precisely and she has a magnetic personality that makes her to
become an excellent teacher.

4. Do you believe that teachers are treated unfairly compared to other professions?
 I believe that in some circumstances teachers are treated unfairly compared to other
professions. Some people think that if you are a teacher you’re not going to be
successful right away due to the fact that the salary is kind of low. I remembered when
my Aunt asked me, what course I’d like to take when I get into college, the time I said ‘I
wanted to be a teacher’ she immediately suggests that I should take accountancy instead
because the salary is too far big compared to a teacher. ‘You’ll be tired every single day
teaching hard headed students while you’re just simply sitting in an air conditioned
office if you’re an accountant’ she added. By that thinking, I can totally tell that teachers
are being discriminated by other people which are very wrong. Teachers serve as the
primary source of learning. They are the parents of all professions so they must change
their mindset and treatment to all the teachers out there.

5. What are the problems and issues related to teacher’s character and behavior that you are
aware of?
 Since Junior High School I observed that the common issues and problems to other
teachers are, some of them aren’t teaching. Some are not motivated to teach us.
Additionally, I am totally aware that there are teachers aren’t treating their learners well.
Some of them showing favoritism which is not a good behavior of a teacher.

6. Identify an expert teacher. Set an interview with him or her. What made him/her as an expert
teacher?
 Mrs. Lotus Libao is actually an expert teacher. The way she confidently stands up in
front and delivers her lesson is excellent. Further, you could see in her eyes the passion
about teaching. She has a convincing voice and face that makes her students to be more
motivated to listen and to learn. These are the reasons why she became an expert teacher.

Activity 1.3. Essay: Formulate your personal philosophy of education. Do it well for this
will form part of your teaching portfolio which you will bring along with you when you
apply for a teaching job. Write it down here.

My personal philosophy of education is student-centered. On my perspective,

every student is unique, with their own unique learning style and set of needs and gifts that
they bring to the classroom. As a teacher, it is my obligation to elucidate their talents and
create an environment that promotes maximum learning for the students. Each child is
unique and learns differently. As an educator, I feel like it is essential to use a range of
teaching tactics while instructing students. Through cooperative learning, the students should
be able to learn from one another and learn to work together. Students should be active
learners who engage in hands-on learning to explore topics. Students should also learn how
to apply the topic at a higher level of reasoning.
Moreover, I believe that in order for students to learn, the classroom must be a
safe and pleasant environment. They need assurance that their teacher is concerned about
them. As a teacher, it is my obligation to create such an environment. An environment in
which all students feel at ease and as though they have ownership. I believe that the child
must have faith in their ability to achieve whatever goals they set in their lives.
Indeed, teaching is both a joy and a challenge. It's also a lifelong process of
introspection and adjustment. Nevertheless, I'm extremely pleased about the chance to be a
part of students' academic, social, and physical development. It gives me tremendous
pleasure and honor to have an effect on the lives of others.

Activity 1.1 Read Article XI of the Code of Ethics then answer the following questions:

1. What is the big challenge for a teacher?

 According to Article XI of the Code of Ethics, teachers need to live with dignity at all
times wherever they are. They must place a premium upon self-respect and self-
discipline. Also, teachers serve as a model worthy of emulation and, most importantly,
teachers should recognize GOD as a guide of his own destiny and of others. In short,
the big challenge for all teachers is to be a good role model for everyone at all times. I
know it’s not easy because we are all human and it’s our nature to create mistakes, but
as much as possible, teachers need to maintain their good image so that young learners
will have the courage to be better individuals as well.

2. Are you ready to face challenge?

 At this point in time, I am now preparing myself for every challenge that I could
probably encounter in the near future. As a future educator, I want to be the best of
myself so that I will be able to make a difference to my future learners.

Activity 1.3 Test your understanding.

1. Do we have such a thing as unchanging values in these changing times?

 Yes, I think despite these changing and dynamic periods, there are still unchanging values
that we carry until now, such as how we honor our elders by saying "Mano po" or not
wearing slippers within our homes. Also, in times of crisis, Filipinos do "Bayanihan" to
help each and every one who is affected by the crisis. These are the unchanging values that
I observed that are still present in spite of these changing times.

2. Should values be taught? Why?

 I do believe that values must be instilled in students by means of education both at school
and at home. It is important to understand that moral values must be taught to students
because moral values influence students' achievements and actions.

3. What is the effect of good habit (virtue) and bad habit (vice) on the will?
 Good habits and bad habits have different effects on the will. If you practice bad habits, it
will feed your vices that will lead you to be weaker. The more bad habits you have, the
more you will be tempted to do another one. On the other hand, we can be inspired and
motivated by good habits. We can redefine the course of our lives, do more of what we
want, and feel better about ourselves by making positive decisions in acts that energize and
help our wellbeing.

Activity 1.1 Critical Questions: Reflect and write your answer to the following questions

1. Does the professionalization of teaching have an impact on you as a future teacher?

 As a future educator, the professionalization of teaching will have a great impact on me.
Because when we talk about professionalization, it refers to the social mechanism by which
any trade or occupation becomes a real "profession of the highest integrity and
competence." Meaning, being a teacher is not easy to achieve because you need to conquer
a lot of challenges that are ahead of you. So if you pass the board exam, training, and all,
and you become a professional teacher, it showcases that you are qualified for that
profession. It reflects your ability, competence, and you, yourself as well. So the
professionalization of teaching has a big impact on me because it is the proof that I am
competent, fit, and capable of this career.

2. The Board of Professional Teachers is described as a collegial body in Sec.5 Article II of RA

7836. What does collegial body mean?
 "Collegial body" means a governmental entity whose power or authority is vested within its
membership.
 An institution in which the decisions are taken not arbitrarily by the head of the institution,
but by a group of persons by a majority vote.

3. What is required of teachers covered by Section 26 of RA 9293 who have not practice their
profession for the past five years?
 Professional teachers who have not practiced their profession for the past five (5) years
shall take at least twelve (12) units of education courses, consisting of at least six (6) units

PANGASINAN STATE UNIVERSITY 18

of pedagogy and six (6) units of content courses, or the equivalent training and number of
hours, to be chosen from a list of courses to be provided by the Board and the Department
of Education, before they can be allowed to practice their profession in the country.

4. Explain the meaning of “exigencies of the service” referred to in Section 6 of the magna carta as
regards transfer of a teacher from one station to another.
 Exigency of the service means an exigency requiring the authority to withdraw the
provision of the service(s) to the producer either for a temporary or permanent period.

5. Actual classroom teaching a day should not exceed six hours. What can be some reasons behind
this limit on teaching hours?
 The reasons why teaching should not exceed six hours because children will be mentally
and physically tired. A child can only recall and comprehend so much in a single day and
students' attention spans aren't long enough to tolerate more than six hours of learning and
studying.

6. What is the importance of Batas Pambansa Blg. 232?

 The Education Act of 1982, or Batas Pambansa Blg. 232 is significant because it offers the
most recent and specific provisions on rights, duties, and parental responsibilities in respect
to education. The law's requirements under Rules 11 and 111 will help to promote
discipline in educational settings even more.
