1. Billy’s Restaurant ordered 200 flowers for Mother’s Day. They ordered carnations at
$1.50 each, roses at $5.75 each, and daisies at $2.60 each. They ordered mostly
carnations, and 20 fewer roses than daisies. The total order came to $589.50. How
many of ach type of flower was ordered? 

2. Find the 200th term of each sequence below: 

1) 2, 3, 4, 5, 2, 3, 4, 5, 2, 3, 4, 5, … 
2) A, 2, B, 3, A, 2, B, 3, …

3. When a teacher divides her students into groups of 4, she had 3 students remaining.
When she divided them into groups of 5, she had 4 students remaining. There were
fewer than 40 students in the class. How many students could be in the class?

5. There were 5 cars in a race. The blue car was in front of the green car. The yellow car
was behind the green car. The red car was between the blue and green cars. The
orange car was in front of the blue car. What was the order of the cars from first to last?

6. Mike, Claire, Raul and Anna are enrolled in the same school. One student is a math
major, one is a chemistry major, one is a physics major and one a biology major. From
the following clues, determine which major each student is pursuing.

(i) Mike and the math major are next-door neighbors.


(ii) Claire and the chemistry major have been in the school for 2 years. Raul has
had been in the school for 3 years and the biology major had been in the school
for 4 years.
(iii) Anna had been in the school for fewer years than Mike.
(iv) The physics major had been in the school for 2 years.
7. Suppose a cereal company puts a prize in each box. There are four possible prizes, and
you want to get two identical prizes. How many boxes would you need to purchase to
guarantee you get two identical prizes? Say the prizes are A, B, C, and D.

8. One night the King couldn’t sleep, so he went down into the Royal kitchen, where he
found a bowl full of mangoes. Being hungry, he took 1/6 of the mangoes. Later that
same night, the Queen was hungry and couldn’t sleep. She, too, found the mangoes and
took 1/5 of what the King had left. Still later, the first Prince awoke, went to the kitchen,
and ate 1/4 of the remaining mangoes. Even later, his brother, the second Prince, ate
1/3 of what was then left. Finally, the third Prince ate 1/2 of what was left, leaving only
three mangoes for the servants. How many mangoes were originally in the bowl?

9. If it takes 20 minutes to cut a log into 3 equal pieces, how will it take to cut the same log
into 6 equal pieces?

10. Four people on one side of a river need to cross the river in a boat that can carry a
maximum of 180 pounds. The weights of the people are 80, 100, 150, and 170 pounds.
(a) Explain how the people can use the boat to get everyone to the opposite side of the
river. (b) What is the minimum number of crossings that must be made by the boat?
