• Growth and development - are inseparable but they
differ from each other. The growth represents the
physical changes of an individual and development
represents the overall changes, structure and shape of
an individual.
• Growth refers to the increase in mass and size of a
body or organs. It typically occurs through the
multiplication of cells and an increase in intracellular
substance
• Development refers to the physiological and functional
maturation of the organism. It also refers to the
increase in capacity and skill to effectively function.
• Meaning of Growth and Development
• Growth terms represent a purely physical sense
of a person, i.e height, weight, size and length
etc. Growth is quantitive in nature. It starts with
conception but ends at some particular age.

• Development implies the overall change in shape,

form or structure, along with the function of the
organ. Development is both quantitative and
qualitative in nature. It is a continuous process
starting from the Womb and end with the tomb.

• According to Crow and Crow (1962) • Growth
refers to structural and physiological changes

• ACCORDING TO HURLOCK • GROWTH is

change in size, in proportion, disappearance of
old features and acquisition of new ones
 Development
• According to Liebert, Poulos and Marmor
(1979) • Development refers to a process of
change in growth and capability over time, as
function of both maturation and interaction
with the environment.
• According to Hurlock(1959) • Development
means a progressive series of changes that
occur in an orderly predictable pattern as a
result of maturation and experience.
