I. Answer the following questions below in minimum of two sentences.

1. How important cultural awareness, gender sensitivity, and political correctness in cross-
cultural communication?

- Cultural awareness allows us to accept and respect cultures that differs from us without arguing
which culture is the best. It is about respecting others’ cultures as well as our own. The
importance of gender sensitivity is about being considerate of the opposite gender’s feelings as
men and women think differently and have varying perspectives. We can avoid hurting other’s
feeling despite of their gender when they want to express themselves. On the other hand,
political correctness, which is a written or spoken language, can be helpful if used as a means of
politeness and acceptance by being willing to understand the thoughts and feelings of others and
to avoid being offensive

2. What is your interpretation in this picture?

- This picture shows the process of Intercultural communication. Intercultural communication is the
exchange of information at multiple levels of knowledge between people from different culture.
Without the knowledge of culture, conflicts and misunderstandings will arise between the
communication. They will fail to interpret and relay the message because they are not aware of the
different language, norms, and values of each culture.

3. What are the challenges in cross-cultural communication?

- Preconceptions and stereotypes, as well as language differences are the most common
challenges that we each face in cross-cultural communication. Because we all have varieties of
language between, and even within our culture, some people are having difficulty
communicating with others. Negative preconceptions and stereotypes often lead to
discrimination which is a huge issue within a country. Nonverbal communication may
sometimes lead to misinterpretation because the mindset of people are different and sometimes
their body language may be wrong or offensive to others.
