STUDENT READINGS and CONCEPT

BUILDING

REFERENCE BOOK: UNDERSTANDING CULTURE SOCIETY & POLITICS PAGE 19-20

Numerous changes and transformations in the social, political and cultural aspect of individuals and societies all over the
world are best understood using the disciplines of Anthropology, political science and sociology as tools. Let us examine briefly
the nature of each discipline and their interrelatedness in the study of culture, society and politics.

Anthropology is the study of human beings and their ancestors. Historically, the discipline traces its roots to philosophy,
world travel and scholars who studied preliterate peoples and evolutionary thoughts. Also, anthropology produces knowledge
about what makes people different from one another and what they all share in commons.

Political Science is the body of knowledge relating to the study of the state and government. It primarily focuses on the
power that plays crucial part in the struggle in which the individuals and their groups may be found involved according to their
capability and degree of interest at all levels—local, regional, national and international.

Sociology is considered the science of society and social behavior, which is viewed as an aggregate of individuals. It
deals with the social development in general and describes and analyzes social life in all its phases and complexities.

CLASS WORK and FORMATIVE

Formative Assessment

Answer the following given questions.

1. Why do you think we need to understand our own culture, society and politics?

We learn more about our country. And by learning more about the country, we are able to benefit it our land in a way where we are
able to come up with solutions to existing problems in these three ideas.

2. How do Anthropology, Political Science and Sociology help you understand society, culture and
politics?

Anthropologists explore how people acquire cultural values. Because culture often has a strong effect on behavior,  political
scientists rely on anthropological studies and methods.

3. Explain the meaning of Aristotle’s famous quote “Man is by nature a political animal.”

an individual who is unsocial naturally and not accidentally is either beneath our notice or more than human.

2. Is it the right to exercise power of a given position that comes from having been
placed in that position?
Power is an entity’s or individual’s ability to control or direct others, while
authority is influence that is predicated on perceived legitimacy.  Consequently,
power is necessary for authority, but it is possible to have power without authority.
In other words, power is necessary but not sufficient for authority.

3. How does Anthropology and Sociology relate to each other?

Sociology and anthropology involve the systematic study of social life and culture
in order to understand the causes and consequences of human
action. Sociologists and anthropologists study the structure and processes of
traditional cultures and modern, industrial societies in both Western and non-
Western cultures.
