Explicit Instruction
(7-10 minutes) Today, you’re going to build a bridge with a partner. When you build
your bridge, it needs to be able to hold 100 pennies for our 100 days of
being in school!

In the video, we learned about 3 different bridges

1. Beam Bridge
2. Truss Bridge
3. Suspension Bridge

(In the presentation, there are images of the bridges.) What do you
notice about all of these bridges? What is the same about them? What
is different? How will you build your bridge?

When you are building your bridge with your partner, you will need to
think about how you will build this vertical and horizontal.
● Vertical: something that rises straight up and down
● Horizontal: laying flat

I am going to give you each paper to draw out your design. You will
only be given a few minutes to sketch out your design.

Guided They will come back to the carpet and leave the design at the table.
Practice/Active
Engagement “Today, you will build your own bridge. You want to make your bridge
30 minutes be built up off the ground since you are going across something. You
also want to make sure your bridge can hold 100 pennies. You do not
want your bridge to fall down to the ground. Make sure you think about
these different things when working with your partner.”

Discuss materials with students before they come to take them.

● “Using what you thought of, what you know about bridges, start
to build your own bridge with your partner.
1. I will call partners up on the board. This time I picked your
partners for you. I will call up partners and tell you where you
are going to be building. They will grab their materials.
2. Students will be given time to look over what they both drew.
They will brainstorm what they will build together with their
drawing they did. (5 minutes)
3. Partners will build their bridge to hold 100 pennies (20-30
minutes)
4. I will grab their attention with the chimes.
5. I will tell them to do last minute touches to their bridges and
raise their hand so we can get a picture of their bridge. Do NOT
destroy your bridge. We will have your classmates go around
and do a gallery walk.
6. I will grab their attention with the chimes and have them meet
me at the carpet.
7. We will do a gallery walk for all students to see each others’
creations
8. Clean up our bridges. Bring any material back up to the table.
We will throw away our bridges since there may be tape on
them.
9. After they clean up and if time, we will meet back at the carpet
to wrap up with our closing.

**No examples will be shown beforehand. Only real life bridges will
have been shown. They will be given the time to build their bridge to
hold 100 pennies. Will show examples of what people did after class
and show each other by doing a gallery walk.

After they are all finished, we will take pictures to post to Seesaw.

Independent NA
Practice

Closing We will discuss a little on the carpet of the activity we were working on.
Then I will hand them a paper with three of these questions. They will
answer them and turn them into the basket.

What was the most challenging part about this project?

What was successful about this project?
What other tests or trials could you do?

**They will get ready to go home.
