How has this clinical rotation helped to define your role as a nurse? Please explain.

This clinical rotation helped me to define my role as a nurse by teaching me realistic expectations when it comes to patient care.
What we learn in the classroom is a good foundation to begin building with, although patients do not always present with text
book manifestations or respond to the medications and interventions we are taught in the classroom. I gained valuable hands on
experience with patient care that helped me understand I will never stop learning or being challenged in this field.

How did you specifically meet the course goals for this course? Give detail for each. (Reminder, course goals are listed on the
evaluation here in blue).
1. I was able to analyze the effectiveness of the plan of care by learning how to prioritize my patients care, which was
something I began clinicals struggling with. I understand the importance of preparing for your day and understanding you
only have a limited amount of time with each patient to accomplish each of their individualized care.
2. During this clinical rotation, I sought out opportunities to promote professional growth, by engaging in every opportunity
presented to be me. I gained valuable experience and knowledge in how to handle patients in restraints, caring for drains,
and monitoring telemetry for changes in my patients’ condition.
3. I provided patient centered care with faculty as resource by notifying my patients nurse of changing vitals and patient
condition. This allowed us to implement quick interventions which helped to improve my patient’s outcome.
4. I implemented nursing care based on scientific evidence by helping to reduce the amount of time my elderly patient was
placed in restraints. They were calm and showed no levels of agitation and by notifying this change to my patients nurse
we were able to remove them which evidence shows to improve the patients skin and psychological integrity.

What is the biggest take away you have from this clinical rotation and how will that affect your future practice?
My biggest take away from this clinical rotation is the importance of teamwork. With working with my professor, classmates, and
nursing team I was able to see more can be accomplished when everyone works together. I was able to see many “silent” rapid
responses, the collaboration between team members was vital to the patient’s overall outcome. In my future practice I will go out
of my way to help my team members to the best of my ability.

What are your goals for your next clinical rotation?

My goal for my next clinical rotation is to be more confident in performing nursing interventions independently. I learned many
skills this rotation that I had not previously had hands on experience performing. I am excited to take these new skills forward and
expand on them. I also want to work on “putting the pieces together” in the clinical setting. While I may perform well in the
classroom setting I found it difficult to bring it forward in the clinical setting. I will work to improve on this in my next rotation.

-At the beginning of this clinical rotation, Stormie was very open about her lack of experience in healthcare and that there were
certain skills and knowledges that she felt she lacked. From the first clinical day, Stormie was the most active of all her peers, never
hesitating in the opportunity to practice a new skill or see a new situation no matter how imposing it seemed. What she lacked in
healthcare experience she more than made up for with maturity and life experience that allowed her to calmly and intelligently
assess these new situations. When presented with new information or skills, if she did not perform up to her own high standards,
she would actively take time during the following week to sure up any weaknesses.
-It was obvious from the outset of the clinical rotation that Stormie is an incredibly compassionate and patient individual. She
never hesitated to take the extra time to learn about her patients and what small adjustments she could make to improve their
comfort and communication. Many of her observations and adjustments were so on point that I would later adopt them when
interacting with the same patients in my traditional nurse role later in the week.
-With one semester remaining in Nursing school Stormie is coming to the end of her education and preparing to enter the world of
real nursing responsibility. I have the highest confidence if she continues with her currently energy and genuine will to learn that
she will be successful new graduate nurse in the coming year.
