How has this clinical rotation helped to define your role as a nurse? Please explain.
This clinical rotation has helped define my role as a nurse because I was able to do so much this semester that I haven’t been able
to before. I think the biggest reason I was able to do this was because of the welcoming staff. Every morning we would get report
and the nurses would ask what patients we had so we wouldn’t miss it because they know that we are just as important as them to
receive report on the patients. If they were about to complete a task that we couldn’t do but knew it would be a great learning
experience for us they would wait and find us so we could watch. This semester was my first time giving medication to two patients
in the same day, this helped me practice time management. Giving meds to one patient vs two is totally different and so much
more time consuming. Doing these things allowed me to structure my day different based on my tasks for the day!

How did you specifically meet the course goals for this course? Give detail for each. (Reminder, course goals are listed on the
evaluation here in blue).
Every week we would get report on our patients and prioritize which one needed to be seen first based on acuity, swift river
helped me do this. We would do assessments on our patients and based on assessments we would come up with goals for the
patient that day. To meet those goals we would provide interventions. I had a patient who had lost a big percentage of body
weight in less then a year. She was on TPN but was also on a clear liquid diet. The goal for her was eat at least 25% on her tray.
Interventions to meet this goal would be to provide her favorite liquids and provide mouth care before meals to simulate hunger.
Every week I would show up to clinical on time dressed in my clinical uniform. I would participate in all activities that were offered
to me, even patients who weren’t assigned to us. The nurses and techs were great about finding us to participate in things they
thought would be cool for us to see and learn. They would answer any and all questions I had pertaining to then particular activity!
Every time I walked in and out of a patients room I would do hand hygiene, and wear gloves whenever I touched a patient. I would
always wear my face mask on the floor and my eye protection anywhere else in the hospital per protocol. On the computer system
it notifies you when new orders were put in for the patient, such as taking out a foley. I would normally see the new orders before
the nurse would, I would go and tell them about the new order and then ask if me and my instructor could implement it. The
nurses loved when we would administer meds because it lessened their workload. Most of the medications I was very familiar with
what they were used for but there were many different ways they were given that I’d never seen or done before. My instructor
was very informative of how to use the prefilled needles. Of course I always did my 3 checks using the 6 rights! I made sure I never
took home any papers with my patients name on them and properly disposed of any that did beside I left the hospital.
Everyone on our floor was very thorough and professional when it came to hand hygiene and wearing the right PPE for all patients
to prevent HAI.

What is the biggest take away you have from this clinical rotation and how will that affect your future practice?
My biggest take away was how friendly and helpful and informative the staff was. There were a couple new nurses on the floor
and they told us how helpful the older nurses were and that I’d they never needed any help or had questions the others were
more then happy to answer and help out. Everybody worked as a team. This made me very comfortable to approach any of the
staff with questions I had or if I needed help. I hope this is how it is on most if not all care setting in the medical field. It really
made for a wonderful clinical experience this semster.

How has this clinical rotation prepared you to take your licensure examination (NCLEX)?
We were on a vascular surgery floor. Most of our patients were on Q4 vitals and neurovascular checks if not sooner. It put into
perspective of how important assessment data was important for these specific patients. And from what I hear more times then
not the correct answer on the NCLEX will be an assessment. Also every week our instructor would create measurable goals for us
to meet based on what our tasks were that day. It made me feel very accomplished when I would complete those goals each
week and it helped me implement interventions to help my patients meet their goals before the end of shift. This will help me
not only identify specific, measurable and reasonable goals but to also come up with interventions to meet those goals. And just
like every other clinical rotation, looking up meds in our drug guide for all patients will help us learn those meds, what they do
what assessments to complete, why education to provide to patients any side effects they might cause.

Faculty Comments/ Student Learning Goals (Goals must be established even if performance is satisfactory. If an item was
identified as N or U, narrative comments are necessary to clarify student performance along with goals to improve performance).

Taylor- You were always here early and offering help to the team. You were a blessing to all. Your knowledge base is strong and at
this point you can shift to understanding the pathophysiology as you start your nursing career. You will be an asset to your team
wherever you work. Good luck!
