Student Reflection (Thoroughly answer all questions)
How has this clinical rotation helped to define your role as a nurse? Please explain.
This clinical rotation has helped me to establish therapeutic relationships with my patient and use communication skills. It is
important to create that relationship with your patient because no matter what unit you are working on, psych mental health is
involved in every aspect. I believe that this has helped to define me as a caring nurse who is very involved in the patient’s wellbeing
by establishing rapport and using therapeutic communication.
How did you specifically meet the course goals for this course? Give detail for each. (Reminder, course goals are listed on the
evaluation here in blue).
I was able to analyze the effectiveness of patient care by establishing short term goals for my patients such as teaching them
coping skills, and good behavior while they were at the hospital. I sought opportunities for personal growth by being involved in
group, having interest in my patient’s chart and history, and collaborating with the nursing staff. I provided patient centered care
by spending the shift talking with my patient, doing activities such as cards and walking, and teaching my patient coping skills.
What is the biggest take away you have from this clinical rotation and how will that affect your future practice?
The biggest take away that I have learned from this clinical rotation is how important it is for patients to trust their nurses, engage
in social activities, and have goals that they can establish while they are in the hospital. This will affect my future practice because I
understand how important it is to do safety checks, mental health exams on patients because no matter what unit you are on, any
patient can be exhibiting signs of depression, etc.
What are your goals for your next clinical rotation?
My goals for my next clinical rotation are to consider how anyone that is in the hospital will certainly struggle with coping, and
sadness related to their conditions. I will continue to practice creating rapport with my patients and using therapeutic
communication to listen to my patients’ thoughts/feelings, keep them safe, and help them to cope with their illness.
Faculty Comments/ Student Learning Goals (Goals must be established even if performance is satisfactory. If an item was
identified as N or U, narrative comments are necessary to clarify student performance along with goals to improve performance).
Natalie was able to complete the PMH rotation on 4West, the Behavioral health unit at Carroll Hospital. She was able to engage
and talk with patients experiencing schizophrenia, major depression, and bipolar disorder. She attended treatment team meeting
and asked pertinent questions about the issues discussed. She was able to co-lead a nursing group with another student. She used
therapeutic communication when talking with patients and was able to establish rapport with her chosen patients. Her comfort
level and understanding of psychiatric continues to develop with the exposure of being on the unit. Was able to identify patient
needs upon discharge and her focused interaction was completed with out problem. Wishing you the best as you move forward in
the nursing program.
