Student Reflection (Thoroughly answer all questions)
How has this clinical rotation helped to define your role as a nurse? Please explain.
This clinical rotation was very beneficial and helped define my role as a nurse because not only was I caring for Mom but also baby
as well. There was a lot of monitoring changes in client condition, managing pain, assessing client safety, and establishing a
therapeutic relationship with patients. I learned so much about collaboration between triage, the nurses in L&D, involving
anesthesia and the doctor as well.
How did you specifically meet the course goals for this course? Give detail for each. (Reminder, course goals are listed on the
evaluation here in blue).
I was able to meet the course goals with assistance of professor Masters. I was able to analyze the effectiveness of the plan of care
by determining my patient (mom & baby) priorities of care and my assessments for those priorities as well. I also able to seek
opportunities for personal growth by asking questions, reading EFM strips, shadowing my nurse, watching procedures such as the
epidural and C-section. I provided patient centered care using Professor Masters as a resource because she has a lot of experience
as a mother/baby nurse, so we talked through mediations, patient labs, patient conditions together. I also implemented nursing
care based on scientific evidence with assistance as we discussed pain management options with my patient who was a mother in
labor (birthing ball, Nubian, epidural).
What is the biggest take away you have from this clinical rotation and how will that affect your future practice?
My biggest takeaway from this rotation is the importance of the nurse’s role caring for patients. We are responsible for monitoring
them and notifying the HCP with any change in client conditions, we are teaching our patients discharge information, educating on
pain management, collaborating with the other nurses from triage and keeping our patients safe and comfortable.
What are your goals for your next clinical rotation?
I struggles a little big with baby’s vitals just because I have not had much experience, but I intend to improve with that for future
practice. It took me some time to identify some priorities for mom & baby as well. My goal for next clinical rotation is to continue
to work on patient priorities and what my interventions will be as well.
Faculty Comments/ Student Learning Goals (Goals must be established even if performance is satisfactory. If an item was
identified as N or U, narrative comments are necessary to clarify student performance along with goals to improve performance).

Natalie presented to OB clinical with professionalism and enthusiasm to learn more about maternal/child health. She made the
most of her time on the unit by taking responsibility of her own learning to ask questions and expand her knowledge. She took
initiative to watch a c-section on live video, watch an epidural placed, review EFM strips, look through her patient’s chart and offer
help to others.

Natalie received a “N” for outcome 2 as she had difficulty obtaining accurate vital signs on infants. She showed a willingness to
grow by performing vital signs on multiple infants in order to improve.

Natalie received a “N” for outcome 26 as she did not provide evidence-based rationales when discussing nursing interventions and
assessments required for her patient. With her attention to detail and willingness to learn, I expect Natalie will seek to apply
evidence-based rationales to her nursing practices in the future.
