Instructions/Reminders
= ( - 3 ) x 4^2 - ( - 20 ) / ( - 2 )
= ( - 3 ) x 16 - ( - 20 ) / ( - 2 )
= ( - 48 ) - ( - 20 ) / ( - 2 ) = 10 - 2
= ( - 48 ) - ( 10 ) (-2) + 4
= ( - 58 )
= 10 - 4
(-8) + 4
= 6/-4
= - 6/4 or -1 1/2

3. You can use the basic percent equation to help solve some of the following problems. Be sure to both show all
of your work and provide a final concluding statement.
a) A certain region reported 800 cases of Covid-19 infections. 28% of those cases are people who are older than 70
years old, and 11.5% are younger than 20 years old. How many cases are in each of these two age groups?
Round your answers to the nearest whole number. [4]
Therefore, there are 224 cases of COVID-19 in the older than 70 category and 92 cases of COVID-19 in the
younger than 20 category.
b) A doctor advises his patient to lose 15% of his current weight in order to improve his health and avoid the onset
of diabetes and other ailments. The patient reaches his goal in four months by losing 20 pounds. Determine the
patient’s weight at the beginning and end of the four-month period. [4]
= 20 / 0.15
= 133.3 lbs
= 133.3 - 20
= 113.3 lbs
Therefore, the patient's weight at the beginning was 133.3 pounds. At the end of the four month period, the
patient's weight is 113.3 pounds.

c) A patient is prescribed 4 3 g of Medication A, and 3 4 g of Medication B. The instructions are to take Medication
A 2 times per day and Medication B 3 times per day. How many total grams of medication will the patient
consume in one day? [4]
Medication A: Medication B:
Total Medication:
4 1/3 g 3 1/4 g
= 4 x 2 (twice daily) = 3 x 3 (three times daily) 8 2/3 + 9 3/4
=8 =9 = 8 + 9 = 17
= 2/3 + 3/4
=1/3 x 2 = 1/4 x 3 = 8/12 + 9/12
= 2/3 = 3/4 = 17/12
= 1 5/12
Total: 8 2/3 g Total: 9 3/4 g = 17 + 1 5/12
= 18 5/12 g
Therefore, this patient will take a total of 18 5/12 grams of medication a day.
