Directions: Read the question presented in Slide 11 and perform what is asked below. Write your
answers on the spaces provided.
During the Spanish colonial period in the late nineteenth century, the Ilustrados were
the Filipino educated class. The word gente de razón has a similar meaning in other
parts of New Spain. They were middle-class Spaniards who had been exposed to Spanish
liberal and European nationalist principles during their education. Rizal was able to
recognize the issues caused by historical causes, identify new societal requirements, and
actively participate in meeting those demands. He was just a limited Filipino who loved
and served the country through his “ilustrado way.”
Rizal was in Europe to research and eventually agitate for improvements. His stay
exposed him to a variety of cultures and behaviors, both positive and negative.
3. Were there other Filipinos with the same agenda as he? Justify your statement.
Yes, other Filipinos are present, but they have a different goal. Only Dr. Jose Rizal had a
love for his nation during that time in Europe, while other Filipinos were partying and
drinking alcohol, and Dr. Jose Rizal was concentrating on his studies.
Expats, or persons who work in a place other than their own country, are having a great
time in this tropical Asian country. According to the most recent Expat Explorer survey,
52% of expats living in the Philippines found more personal fulfillment here than in their
home country. They also know that they have a better chance of succeeding in another
country.
